265's or 285's???

I feel like a noob asking this, but I can't make up my mind at all. I'm getting new tires in the next month and can't decide between 265's and 285's. My original plan was to lift my 4runner 2.5" and put 265's on, but my rear coils ended up giving me just over 3". With that I'm putting some Tundra 5100's on this weekend and that should put me ~2.60-75" up front. I've gone back and forth numerous times and can't make a solid decision.

Aesthetically 285's will look better and fill out the wheel wells better. Logically 265's will be better on gas mileage, less rubbing, cheaper, more power and less height (5' 2" fiance does not like getting into my 4runner now, so 33's would make it a bit worse). My 4runner is my DD and I will be taking it up to the mountains the snowboard this year and on some other road trips. So mileage does matter, but I'm all about proportional lifts and 3" and 285's look awesome.

I have also thought about leaving the Tundra 5100's at the lowest perch for ~2" up front and getting some 906's to level out the back. Then the 265's would be more acceptable in my mind and the 4runner would be lower for the fiance.

Again I feel like a dweeb :nerd: for asking for help with this, but tires are a big investment to regret later.

Now is the time to ask. I like the looks of 285's too, but have never looked at my 265/75's and thought they looked small. I think it's the perfect size if your Runner is a DD. I would much prefer to choose better MPG's and power for a bit of looks. That being said, if you do decide to go 285's, I'm not going to argue!

If the added clearance is your goal, then it's a no brainer.

*edit* And I'm lifted 3" front and rear.

I also kicked around the 285/265 question.
I am so happy that I went 265!
Power is still good so a re-gear is not in my future. And I only have a little rubbing.
It's a little late to add a body lift for me (sliders and bumpers) so I don't see 285s in my future either.
A body lift is almost needed to run 285s.

uh.. what about the 255/85/16 Pizza cutter? If between 265 & 285, I would go 285. But, throw the 255/85 in there and I am very happy with them.

FYI, I have no rub at all with the 255/85/16's.. I am using stock 4.10 gears, and yes it does not have as much power but I have gotten used to it. It's fine in 4lo, and has pulling power.. I get roughly 19mpg (Texas is flat!) on the highway too. It Rubbed on the factory bumper, I ended up using my pocket knife to cut away the little inside corners where it rubbed and in the back.. the Mud Flaps rubbed at full stuff, mainly on one bolt.. so I removed that one bolt. Below is the stock bumpers with the 255/85/16... yes, a little narrow.. no spacers but a different BS wheel will fix that.

I also think you need to take into consideration the wheel it's going to go on and how aggressive a tire you are planning on getting. A wheel with a good backspacing will give it a bigger look as it will push it out and obviously a more aggressive tire will help too.

Tough call. Although 285's definitely look better, I'm not sure the 3.4 has enough power to keep them going.

I would hate to lose much more power.

im gonna say 285, but thats just me. i didnt really notice a power drop or drop in performance when i got my 285s(for me my 4runner was never fast and always seamed like a dog). i am also running a E rate 285 so it is a bit heavy, but i typically run it at 60-65 psi so my mileage doesnt suffer too much either, again its a truck so i dont expect it to ride like a cadillac, so the e rated tires, and 60psi is ok by me. i too have a short lady, and thats why i made my sliders stick out far, so she has a step to get in. but really the jump from 265 to 285 is only gonna be like a half inch at most in overall height so i dont think she would ever notice it. but yeah i think that the type of tire will have a lot to do with the looks, just my .02

Thanks for the responses. I'm undecided on the tires I'm getting yet. It all depends on my bonus I get. Right now I have about 400-450 to spend and I should have another 200-300 after my bonus. Keep in mind this is all the money I have for tires and I would prefer to spend closer to $600. The only way I can justify getting tires is because the money from my old tires and 5 stars will be going back into the main bank account and not into the mod account. Lame.

Tire Choices:
Goodyear Duratrac are my top choice but they are expensive. 285's in this tire are out of the question, but 265's may be possible. I can get the 265's for $592 after all the rebates and offers.

Yokohama AT/S are a cheaper choice for me. 265's are around $145 a piece through Tirerack and are a solid tire. 285's are $155 a piece. These aren't as aggressive, but have great reviews and will be good DD's.

Treadwright Wardens are an option. I know people are fans of retreads, but I've heard too many good things. 265's are $500 to my door and 285's are $550 to my door. Cheapest option so far.

Other than that tires get pretty expensive. I love the look of KM2's but I don't need a mud terrain and they are expensive as well. I will most likely be putting them on a set of LC rims I just got, so backspacing shouldn't be problem.

I've thought about 255's, but I'm not a fan of the skinny tires. They might look ok with my LC rims, but I haven't been sold on them yet. If I can find a good deal on some though I may go for it.

I've also thought about picking up these, but they aren't convenient to get up to me and I would want to get some spacers to push the tires out a bit further. Or transfer them onto my LC rims and sell the FJ's. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/sale-...-five-16x7-fj-wheels-tires-la-cali-900-a.html

I have an E tire right now and I hate it. I agree they are way too stiff for a 265.

Yeah I think the 265's will be best for now. As much as I would love to get 285's, it would be more cash, less power & mpg and more work to get them to fit right.

Almost twins...I have Downey coils in the back not LC. I'm all alone with the Downey coils I have. :moping: I'm looking forward to getting the LC rims on and that extra inch of width. I also just checked Discount Tire Direct and they have $50 off a set of 4 tires so 4 tires at the price matched tire rack price and all the discounts and rebates would be $587 to my door. This is without the warranty, but that is an extra $100. Very tempting. Now all I have to do is convince the fiance which one of my balls I want to give up. :bash:

EDIT: Just found Duratracs for $178 a tire, so all 4 using the Discount Tire's price match and $50 off along with the Goodyear $50 and Treadlightly $75 it would come out to $548.16 to my door. Going to have a talk tonight.

Nevermind, Discount matches the shipped price so the 4wheel parts price is the best yet. Still $592 isn't bad.

After having had 2 sets of 285. I am going with 265's this time around.
I am due for tires here soon, probably around christmas.


I have already decided on 265/70/17 Duratrac C.
With this supercharger, I can really feel how much power loss I have with the 33's. I dont know how to describe it, but I can definitely feel its the tire size slowing me down. Hoping to get back above the 20 mpg mark when I get the new tires too.

I was kicking around the idea of a 275/70/17 for a while, but there are practically no good tires in that size.

I have the Yoko AT/S, LR C, and they are a great tire. I have beat the heck out of them. They have taken me everywhere. I have wheeled hundreds of miles offroad on some of the hardest trails in Moab. On road they ride great. I wouldn't get them if I wheeled in mud.

I may strongly consider the Duratracs when I need new tires. (it may be a while, the Yokos are wearing like iron) They will add to the appearance of my rig, they look awesome. And I have heard that they ARE awesome.

The 265s will actually be wider on the 8" wide LC wheels, compared to the 7" stock wheels. The LC wheels have a little backspacing so that will push them out a little more too.
