285/70R17 Pictures!! 08 4R 4WD V6

Tried these on my stock 2008, no lift. They will rub the upper control arm at full turn. Back off 1/4 turn and all ok. This rub point is smooth metal so more than likely no major damage, probably lots of noise. So just avoid full turn if you really want them.

Move the forward inter plastic a little more forward, very easy. 3 screws at the bottom. All else clears.

Is top clearance a problem? Didn't have a huge block to put under a front tire during this test however, I don't think this will be a problem. In another post I described how when climbing over a big rock that causes a rear wheel to lift off the ground, that front wheel suspension only moved up 1 5/8." WOW!! That's Stiff. Upward travel appears to be very limited. Conversely, the opposite rear wheel moves up a whopping 6"(under the fender). So no, I don't think top clearance will be a problem, even with no lift.

However, after all of that I thought they really made the car look too rugged for me!! I didn't like the look, so I backed out and switched to GY Wrangler SA 275/70R17. Will post pic's of these later.

Here are some pics of the 285/70R17 BFG's.
These pics were brightened to get the darker areas to show up.

Here's the rub. Your looking at the very top of the tire and the upper control arm.

You can see the edge of white tape on the control arm. The tape marks where the tire touches. The wheel is turned fully. The interference does not appear to be too serious. I did not drive the car with these tires on.

Back off 1/4 turn and all ok. This rub point is smooth metal so more than likely no major damage, probably lots of noise. So just avoid full turn if you really want them.

Hope these pics help all who are interested in the 285's.

Do you plan on on doing a small lift in the future? I wouldn't be comfortable with that much rub, and I'm surprised that the tire shop let you drive off with it that bad. The ones around here check for rub and are pretty strict about it.

Hi Josh

No, I didn't drive off, recall in my post I said "However, after all of that I thought they really made the car look too rugged for me!! I didn't like the look, so I backed out and switched to GY Wrangler SA 275/70R17. Will post pic's of these later."

Everyone should be aware that a lift does absolutly nothing for this rub porblem. Wheel spacers is probably the best way to correct this rub but, that will make the forward/aft fender clearance slightly worse.

Oh, sorry I missed the part about you switching them. Good choice though.

Yeah, I noticed that the lift doesn't do anything for the rubbing. I get a slight rub with the 265/70/17 Nitto's that I put on today. So I might trim SLIGHTLY, but I'll see if it bothers me enough.

Wait, where does it rub?
If it's in the front, don't cut anything.... if that's what you mean by trim. That front inner panel can easily be moved forward. Let me know and I'll show you what I did.

My new 275/70r17's work great.
Haven't posted pics yet, hopefully soon.
Show us some pics of the Nitro's, or have you already done that.

Congrats Spaceman...

the SAs are supposed be a great tire. Do you get any rub with them and did you get a load range "c" tire? How's the ride? Please post pics as I'm leaning strongly toward that tire and would like to see how they look. Really appreciate a quick review/impressions. Thanks!

Like them so far. For me they look better than the very rugged looking BFG's
Only have about 10 mi on them so far.
Hope to post pics mid next week. Watch for them to show up as a new Thread titled with the tire size.

Now would an aftermarket control arm (ie. Camburg) have solved this problem? Part of there benefits is being able to allow for wider tire clearance, correct?

Hi Mike

Not familiar with that item but, sounds like that could be very helpful for the 285/70r17 BFG tires.

The 275/70r17 GYW SA tires are working just fine with no such mod needed. The slight rubbing of the UCA is of no concern and totally negligible.

I would love to see pics . I really would like to try those tires next. I will stick with my 265/70/17's though.

To fit a 285 tire, while retaining stock components, a 3" spacer lift and wheel spacers are the cheapest solution. 275/70's are going to rub as well unless a lift is added. Tire fitment has been discussed at length since the gen 4's came out. In fact in one of the op's other threads, Good Times advised him of this but apparently had to see for himself.

UCA's will eliminate rubbing and allow for even wider tires, but have the added benefit of restoring caster to the suspension geometry, restoring some handling feel. ICON (Donahoe) UCA's have the most adjustments available among the a/m uca suppliers.

Going into the 34-35" tire range requires more mods including trimming back a body mount.

Lance (Good Times) has detailed threads on the 4runner as to what fits and lift options at yotatech and ultimateyota.

Pics .....pics .....pics

have always run BFG AAt's , but wanted to try something different , so I went with Revos , now that they are pretty much done , I'm going to try to go with GYW SA LT265/70/16 "C" since they are also severe weather rated , if I can't get a deal on them then maybe I'll go with "P" . I was told even the "P" rated in the GYW SA are pretty tough with the Kevlar , but I'll try for "C".

Not sure to who or what your comments were directed to but for what it's worth the 275's, as I discussed previously, are working great without a lift or anything else. The ground clearance increased a little over 1 inch. (7.5" to 8.5") I still hope to post some pics soon. Just took a bunch of pics this past week.

Your statement "275/70's are going to rub as well unless a lift is added" does not apply to my 4R. A lift in no way would help any of the more serious tight-clearance situations that I noticed.

Thanks for the yotatech and ultimateyota ref. Hope to get some time soon to read all of them.

My big goal next is to better understand all aspects of disconnecting the Sway Bar for offroad trips. The front suspension on this 4R seem to be way too tight which I think is caused by this huge Sway Bar. Hopefully I will have time to get into this over the next 2 weeks.

So wait, on an 05 V8 SE will the 275/70/17 BFG All-terrains rub or not?? If so, would a 2/1 spacer lift alleviate this?

A spacer lift will not help at all!!!!!

A wheel spacer will help the UCA rub problem. I can't speak for that tire. It might be slightly wider than my 275 and therefore may rub a little. Some tire places will try it for free. They did for me when I tried the 285 BFG AT. (I posted pics of the 285's and the rub) I think you will then see that you can live with that slight rub. It will only happen at full turn.

Please read all of my previous postings on this subject. Sorry, I don't know how to link them. I like the added inch the 275's gave me. I presently have a very very slight rub at full turn.

Good luck with yours.

Finally posted the 275/70r17 GYW SA pictures. See the new thread.
