285/65r18 frame rub help

I have the basic Toytec 3" lift and last night I put on 285/65r18 Terra Grapplers on wheels with 4.5" backspacing - I thought I'd be at least close to ok, but I turned the wheel and and drove out of my garge, it sounded like I had baseball cards in my spokes. Trimming bumper/moving fender line is no problem, but then I realized when I turn the wheel all the way, I'm rubbing the frame. I looked up some threads on here but it doesn't look like this is a common issue. It sounds like I have 2 options:

1) New alignment and ask for +4.0 caster.

or

2) Different tires/wheels

From my last alignment about 2 months ago, I'm at +3.2 and +3.5 caster. Could the .8 and .5 be enough to fix the problem or does it sound like I'm out of room to play around with the caster? And are there any other solutions to this problem - trying to avoid different tires/wheels.

*** I've added pics of both tires rubbing. One is on what I believe is the body mount - the other hits the body before it even gets to the body mount. Looks like the same issue, one side is just worse than the other??Sorry that one pic is upside down, but I think you can still see the problem. ***

Body lift will fix the side rubbing your fender, it will not fix the side rubbing the body mount. Maybe have an alignment and have them get as much caster as possible and then If needed do a body mount chop! Easily done yourself and will help a lot. If it keeps rubbing the body, a body lift is also fairly inexpensive(less than a new set of wheels) and can easily be installed yourself if you have basic skills.

BMC body mount chop is needed! Not going to look for link while on my phone, but it's here somewhere. It's on the lift sticky by Ark Swamp. You could prob Google search 4Runner Body Mount Chop! I had to do mine and many others do as well.

Thanks for the reply guys. I found the body mount chop link - do I have to re-weld it after the chop? I've seen people say both. But I'll start with the alignment and hope more caster helps - then go from there.

Thanks again.

RyanCocolin, DO NOT go messing with your caster. Messing with your caster will screw up the handling characteristics of your 4Runner, possibly even to the point of being dangerous. My Runner has the Toytec Ultimate lift and YES, I have some rubbing on the body mount at full lock and have had it for several months. I fully intend on taking a pneumatic cutting tool and cutting the body mounts in the next few weeks (its cold outside). Aftermarket BMC covers are available and can be welded on later.

Ryan , are you running longer control arms with your lift? If not, than you are already at max caster, regardless of what your dealer is saying. Why waist time money and energy? Cut the body mounts.

I haven't welded mine back. Has been over a year and no probs yet. I wouldn't think you would have to weld it back.

You can just cut and clearance but it leaves a hole that looks ugly. We (Off Road Warehouse) sells a body mount plate that you use as template and weld in. They are $15 each plate and runs about $300 in labor. Chopped, welded, and painted. So any of you So Cal guys can take advantage of this.

As always, super helpful. Next steps are the body mount chop and then a body lift. preacher35 I am running longer control arms, but I'll leave the alignment alone. Thanks for all the input.

Get your body lift from shootmymime, great prices!

Cool, shootmymime, what do you have? And any recommendations on 1" or 1 1/ 2" ??

Thanks monti for the mention.

Ryan i have a whole kit available for 4th gens.

Here is my link to the 4th gen page. look it over and ask any questions you have. http://www.toyota-4runner.org/sale-...ts-just-like-my-3rd-gen-page.html#post1764314

in that link you will also find links to my more detailed 3rd gen page along with a link to the google doc for 3rd gen instructions. (im working on updating the 4th gen page)

But now through the end of January i have a 10% sale. Thats shipped to your door with all the hardware, blocks, steering spacer and instructions needed to do the installation.

Like i said im not quite finished with my 4th gen material so you may have to do some thinking as to raising your front bumper and how you want to mold the rear bumper. but some ideas are in the instructions.

This seems like it's gone a little more complicated than needed. I have the 3" Toytec lift and the front end leveler spacer. I added the Spidertraxx spacers. I did a bit of plastic surgery to shorten up the mud flaps and to make the front bumper and it's liner move up and forward. Then I got an alignment. There is a wee bit of rub at max turn in reverse but once I put about 20,000 miles on my tires that's gone away totally. The only thing I can think of is your rims are 1" larger than mine.

Ruffian your leveling spacer probably accomplishes the same as the bl i'd be looking at. what's the offset of your wheels?

I honestly do not remember what the offset was. I just took it in to be aligned at a knowledgeable shop along with the paperwork from Spidertrax & Toytec and made sure to tell them to set the computer up with what my research had shown. I first did the suspension lift along with the top place spacer that Toytec recommended and then a few days later put on the Spidertrax spacers. Then when I went in to put on the 33" tires, the guy there in the shop was experienced with off road vehicles. He & I did the plastic surgery. He then did the alignment. I never had much of an issue except right after putting brand new shoes on her. Then I would get rub like I mentioned before. Right now I'm a good 30,000 miles on the current tires and I haven't had rub in many months. I expect after I put on yet another set of new shoes the rub at maximum turn in reverse will come back.
