285 70 17 big horns under stock T4R...?

ok so i know a bunch of you guys say the biggest you can go without a lift is the 265 70 17(or 16), but i anticipate a lift in the next year or so, and need new tires now(ish) and ran across a screaming deal on a slightly used set of big horns, all four for less than the price of one new. so i cant pass it up. my question is what will be my issues? just rubbing on the UCA at full lock and maybe some pinch-welds on the fire wall? -dont mind that i can take care of that with a BFH. sure my gearing will suffer a slight amount but who cares. itll get regeared further down the road. any other thoughts? or experience from the guys with the tire? ...fightman80?

Edit: Saw size in title.. Doubt you will fit those stock without A LOT of trimming.

freind had 285/75/16s on his 4runner stock deff not gonna work with out choping and beating stuff just end up getting a toytec kit

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say...no way you're fitting those tires without a lift man......sorry. If they are such a great deal....why not sit on them, and find some temporary 265's?? You could also do my lift now for about $350.00....and fit the 285's....if interested in the lift....let me know...I can tell you what I'm running .....or see my build thread!

Well I got them I'm gonna put them on in the am and see how it is. I'm sure ill have some rub just how much and can I live with it is the question now...

ok so after driving around town on these for about 40 min, they are definitely a lot more noisy than my terra grapplers and a lot more rough, but then again it is an aggressive mud tire so it comes with the territory. that being said i like them, i will run them off road later today and tell you more. but the big thing here is they DO fit, i know everyone on here is saying you cant run a 285 on a non-lifted runner, but im telling you for me anyhow its working. now it might be that its because of the 17" wheel as apposed to the 16", as i am running 17" tundra rims, i know they have a more aggressive back spacing so it kicks the wheel out more and with the larger diameter it might just be enough to clear the UCAs. i do have some minor rubbing on the inner fender splash guard at the firewall under full lock but that is easily delt with with some trimming. other than that i am good to go.

Yeah, they'll be tolerable on road. When we say they'll rub a lot, we mean when you're trying to flex and turn off road. If it annoys you too much once you take it on the trails, a 1" BL will help a lot and it's cheap. You can also take it off later and sell it if you feel you don't need it once you get a susp. lift.

yeah the do rub some under full lock and flex, but not bad,(im kinda used to it, ran 33x12.50x15 on a stock 4x4 85 toyota pickup for ages) it hits on the frame rail mainly behind the struts, but it does super well! i had it in some mud and snow mix today(about 6" of snow with a mud base) and climbed a lot further along the trail than i ever expected to make it! here are some pics

sorry for the poor quality cell phone... the last two are of the trail that i was attempting to up. if id had a locker id of made it but no factory "RR DIFF LOCK" and i haven't gotten my ARB yet...

and that trail was steep even when its dry out you need 4wd with super good tires. these last 4 are just of the flex.

Here is my take on the old tire size/lift question.
You should be able to fit the same size tire on the vehicle, with or without the lift. If you do have a suspension lift with enough flex then the tires should fully stuff and would end up in the same position as if on stock suspension. If you rub on stock suspension then you should have rubbing in the same places when lifted. True, it will rub more often on stock suspension. I have over 3" of lift and rub my 265/75-16.

Yeah my 285/70/17's still rub with the lift that I have. Although I do have the limited flares, but I can't imagine running that size stock. Crazy.

well no doubt about it they rub(as you guys said, but i figured i could run them and that was my question, will they work, not will they rub...), and im ok with the rub, but yes i do need a lift now. i plan on doing a 1" body lift anyways so i can eventually run 35s. anyhow i am happy and can live with the rub. by the time i get the tires i want(new MTRs) i will have enough $$$ saved up to put a lift on it and then get me some. thanks everyone you all have been a wealth og knowledge, and an invaluable tool
