285 70 17 Tires Installed, But Now My VSC Light Is Permanently On...

disconnect battery for 5+min the neg terminal

That's not really going to do anything, the ABS/VSC/TRAC systems are one-trip logic, meaning if the problem exists it sets the light; problem goes away it turns off (there's a couple DTCs that deviate from this, but that's how that system and the SRS system function). It's not like the OBDII side where you have Current, Pending, and History DTCs.

It is possible to have the ZPC be incorrect and the vehicle turn the light on for it, but it usually sets the ABS system off as well as it stores a DTC that basically says "I know my ZPC is wrong, please fix me" (forget the exact DTC number off the top of my head). That's what typically happened with the '03~'04 4Runners when they got low battery voltage or sometimes when clearing the ECM of DTCs.

It is possibly that there's a steering angle sensor DTC stored because it didn't like how it was after the alignment. Most of the newer alignment machines give you warnings about needing to redo the ZPC and possibly other systems when doing an alignment on a vehicle (now with LDA, Adaptive Cruiser, ect. that's probably going to be something that gets ignored/overlooked by a lot of quick alignment shops going forward; that's a scary thought...)

Honestly, I'd like to see what the DTCs are rather than just guess why the light is on...

yea i figured so.. it's just always the first thing i do when i have an issue with any car.

Probably need to do a Yaw Rate and Acceleration Sensor Zero Point Calibration. Here is a link to get you started:

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/71093-yaw-rate-acceleration-sensor-zero-point-calibration.html

This is most likely ALL you need to do. I lifted my 4runner myself and this same issue came up and I knew I didn't jack up any of the wires. I followed this guide and boom, light was off and my crawl control worked again. If the wires not jacked, don't waste your time over at Toyota when you can do this in 5 minutes.

So they realigned it and got the tires to clear the body mount when turned. The manager said to go to Toyota and get them to fix it so the light goes off. He said they'll reimburse me for the cost.

Here's the what my steering wheel looks like while going straight.

Man that's unacceptable !!:toilet3: Most good alignment shops have tool to keep steering wheel straight during procedure or be lucky enough to sit & hold the wheel yourself !!

Sorry for the delay. Life's been out of control busy. I got my T4R checked and zero codes found.

Forgive me for such direct statement: but why in the hell did you need alignment after installing new tires? But even if one was done there was no reason for the shop to mess with ABS wires. The fact that they tried to hide the damage liability and accountability is discouraging at least!

Same thing happened to me after installing a 3" lift on my 09 Tacoma. I damaged the ABS wire plugged into the sensor and had that same VSC light. I just plugged in the new wire and the VSC light went out on the dash. I would at times get the VSC engaging and growling after I did the lift install and 285's. It would usually happen on just small incline/decline in the road and would lock everything up. I had the Yaw sensor zero'd out but it never went away, so I had to be careful if I was diving on the freeway and exiting a sloping ramp etc.

Pardon my ignorance on this, but I thought that when up sizing tires to 285's you're supposed to get an alignment done? That was one of my reasons for not going 285's when I had the chance.

As long as nothing is wrong with your alignment, there is no reason to it aligned just by changing tires (to any size). Tires will not change the alignment.

Tire places offer alignments because that is the time to check/re-align the vehicle.

Fair question. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to get an alignment after replacing tires to ensure better wear on the shoes you just bought. When changing tire sizes one should most definitely get an alignment as the size difference will change the alignment specs.

I'm guessing the kid doing the alignment at Sears on my right accidently hit/pulled the wire and tried to "fix" it. Either way, the manager of the shop said he'd pay for the damages to fix it.

ARGHHHH!!! Took it in for its appointment today to get the steering wheel adjusted. And wouldn't you know- 1.5 hours of them ****ing around with my rig it now pulls right, steering wheel goes a little left (instead of right like before), AND the crawl control light flashes.
