285/70/17's on 3rd Gen Limited 2WD

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the asking such simple questions, but I don't own a 3rd gen so I don't know much about them. My nephew has a 1998 Limited 2WD model that I would like to upgrade as a gift for Christmas. I have a set of basically new BFG KO2's in 285/75/17's in my garage that were on my 5th gen that I'd like to give to him.

What I need to know is what all needs to be done to run tires of this size on a 3rd gen Limited? Will a basic 3" lift be enough? He will be running stock 5th Gen wheels with these tires.

I was thinking of buying him these springs: 3" Lift Kit with front and rear OME coils

With these shocks:
Front Bilstein Height adjustable 5100 shocks
Rear Bilstein Shocks for 96-02 4RUN

Would this work? If so, will it be enough or would other mods also be required? Thanks in advance for your help. I know I could probably spend some time searching these forums but I figured you guys could get me all the info I need quickly, plus provide some much appreciated advice and first hand knowledge.

For lifting a stock 2WD with no extra weight that setup should be fine. I would extend the rear brake hose while you're at it. Not sure about that tire size on 17s tho... does he have 17" rims now? I'll let someone else jump in on that.

EDIT: given the other thread that just posted today about an LBJ failure, that might be the more prudent gift, but lifts and wheels and tires are more fun Lol

17" tires won't fit on 16" rims (wheels) so that's a no go

Your first post mentioned a set of basically new BFG KO2's in 285/75/17's in my garage that were on my 5th gen, didn't say wheels and, but that makes sense. Yes that should work.

Get a second opinion though, and also your title says 285/70/17 but your first post says 285/75/17 - that could make a difference to fit

I didn't make it totally clear, but in the last sentence of the second paragraph, I did say these tires would be on 5th gen wheels. Sorry for the confusion. Thanks for your help.

The only concern will be whether they rub the front upper control arm, which can be solved by spacers or aftermarket UCA.

Otherwise - short answer is yes, as the only difference b/w 2wd and 4wd are the rear UCA and drive shaft, from a "suspension" standpoint.

They may also rub at the pinch weld at the rear of the front fender. Mine do.

285/75/17 should rub very badly even with a lift. It will rub the UCA, the pinch weld near the fire wall, and the front bumper. Nearly a 34" tire. Anyone else agree?

They are 285/70/17, not 285/75/17. They are about 32.8" in diameter.

I'd still send it. Nothing a BFH can't fix.

I think he'd be fine with that setup. But I'd definitely add some wheel spacers to the list, I don't think he'd clear the UCA without them.

I've got a 3 inch lift on my 2wd and I'm running 275/70r18's which are around a 33.2" tire. These are mounted on Tacoma Limited wheels. They would have never cleared the UCA without my 1.25 inch wheel spacers.

I'm also not rubbing the pinch weld at all, but I did have to do just a bit of trimming on my front fender flare :guitar3:

Oh okay. Still my 285/70/17 MT2's on 2015 trail wheels would not work without spacers. They would not clear the UCA. With the spacers I had to trim the front bumper valence but they clear the pinch weld.

All the same, sounds like you are a cool uncle to have!
