285/70 or 265/70..which one would you choose?

Ok, so I've done tons of research on this, and this will be my setup:

'05 Sport v8 w/x-reas
2.5/1.5 daystar lift
Spidertrax spacers
Stock 17inch sport wheels.
Tires will be BFG A/T KO

I know the 285/70/17 will fit, with some trimming of the front end plastics. this tire size looks badass, but the rubbing isuses, weight, and speedo/gas mileage changes will be more noticable than the smaller tire

...But the 265/70 still look good, and the tire-to-fender-opening ratio seems to look really good to me. and less weight and rubbing issues than with the 285.

--So what would you choose?
I dont want to end up regretting my tire choice.. like getting the 285's and getting driven insane by all the rubbing... or getting the 265's and being unhappy with how tame they look.

I have P265/70R17 right now. I'm going to install the same lift soon. And when I'm ready to throw on the same wheel spacers...I'm going 285s KM2s w/o looking back. But the only draw back is that the same size spare won't fit underneath. So I would get a rear tire carrier.

I'm not going to be doing much hardcore wheelin' just easy stuff... I will probably just keep the stock spare under there for now, so thats not really an issue at this point in time.

I just read on Daystar's website that they recommend a max tire diameter of 32inches with the lift I've bought. the 285's are pretty much 33's

More noticeable power loss (desire to re-gear?) might be an issue with the 285s.

I have your setup with the 285/70/17 in a Firestone Destination AT, and let me tell you.. rub a DUB DUB!! Dude I can't back up and turn the wheel without rubbing. The main place it rubs is on the front of the fender wheels. Where the bumper/fender flare meet at a point- that is where it catches the tred. Not to over exagerate- it sounds like I am ripping the fender off the 4 runner when I back up and turn the wheel- loud enough to point that people around me, turn their head to see what I have hit.

I have the proper offset wheel in an American Racing ATX 17x9 so that wouldn't be the issue. If you are willing to trim some of your beautiful paint- do it... if not I would advise you not to. I plan on getting a true 3'' lift with an OME setup soon and a roger brown 1.5 bodylift on top of that in order to keep this tire size because it truly does look badass with that big of meats on a 4runner. Hope this helps!

If I may, let me throw out one more tire size -- 255/75/17. I was skeptical about running tall skinny tires, but after getting them on I am totally satisfied with the way they look and perform. The really don't look much different than the wider tires, and as a bonus they are way cheaper.

-I realize that the 285's will require trimming the front bumper and splash guard... and also require me to remove the mudflaps (plastic things)

-I dont see BFG/AT/KO avail in 255/70/17. (and im kinda sold on this tire) I've also never seen pics of this tire size on a 4th gen, do you have pics of your truck with this size, photorunner?

...I suppose if they made a 275/70/17 BFG AT KO then that size would be the best of both worlds.. but I dont see that tire size listed from my supplier

Haha Im in the same boat as you. Im getting the Daystar 2.5 and the wheel spacers, and I love the look of the 285 BFG AT KOs. I took my 4runner to a body shop and he said it would probably rub even with the spacers:ybrick:. And said I would most likely have to trim, and take off the mud flaps (something I dont want to do). But the BFGs look great, so I think im just going to give in and trim.

I'm in the exact same boat. i'm doing the exact same setup this fall and buying the same times.

I am probably going to go with the 265's.....as much as i would love to do the 285's.....i think i'd regret it because of the rubbing.

Bump for maybe some other members coming on who have installed 33's and how much trimming they had to do.

Maybe someone can post up some pics of the work they had to put in to run these tires without rubbing.

I did the 2.5 Daystar and ordered 285 BFG M/T's. The front rubbed but the rear was ok. I switched to 265/75R16. The 75 gives you a little more width and sticks outside the fender just enough to give you a little more aggressive look, and the 265 clears with no problem. Another thing to consider, depending on the purpose of the lift, is that with the 285, you loose .5" of your lift space from the top of tread to tire well. So if the look of the lift is a concern, I would recommend the 265. I don't know if there is a 265/75R17 though, that varies from brand to brand.

I have a different lift and different tire set up but I'm running 33's on a 2.5/2.0 lift with wheel spacers. You'll have to trim the bumper but you can actually keep your lining intact and simply move it forward and avoid rubbing. Front mud flaps will have to go.
I did the install myself last week and honestly the trimming(used my dremel. Took 5 minutes to mask off the area and cut) , moving the liner up and removing the mud flaps was the easiest part so don't let that turn you off to the idea.
-The wheel spacers aren't designed to solve the rubbing issue or at least not the bumper rubbing. They're there to help you clear the UCA.
-you'll loose a little power simply from having a heavier tire but I didn't find it to be significant at all with my v8.
-until I decide to get a speedohealer or something like that I'm just keeping in mind that 70 mph is more like 74 mph.

Just my thoughts on it. I'm very satisfied with how mine turned out.

I think the 265/70/17 looks fine with the DS lift .

Bigger tires are nice , but with all that you are concerned about I would go with 265's .

I read all 15 pages of this thread, there are pics and info on all the trimming needed.

if you read the entire thread, it becomes apparent that the caster settings can mean the difference between rubbing on the body mount, or not. I'm not worried about rubbing the bumper or mudflaps, just that body mount.
(and yes, the spidertrax will only remedy the UCA rubbing)

I went with the 265x75x16 Michelin LTX® A/T2 just to get a bit more height and also did the Daystar lift, ST spacers, along with FJC shocks and springs. They perform really well and look awesome with no noticeable loss of gas mileage which was a primary concern. I wanted something “meatier” that the stock tires without totally destroying ride and or gas millage and the 75 height seemed to be the right choice for me. I still had to mod the wheel wells to prevent rub (piece of cake) and add the Speedo Healer to tweak the odo but I am very happy with the results. But mine are 16's so this post may be irrelavent. My $.02 anyhow.

Went through this last month. For me having a workable spare, no rubbing or removal of hardware, and the way the 265/70/17 Destination M/Ts look was where I went. I would have cut up the truck but the loss of a usable spare was the real deal breaker. When I passed by a group of cops training on radar I ran back and asked them to clock me so I could calculate my new larger tire error. Clocked at 45mph when the speedo read 45mph! Did Toyota intend for these vehicles to have the 265s? Go figure..

I use 265/75/16 BFg I have OME 3" lift etc.
I keep with this size because I DO alot of Off roading and the width is not why I get stuck , Plus the Atrac likes this size tire better/ also the whole front end likes a smaller rotating Mass, Etc . Ihave several friends That use the 255/80/16 Size in BFG Mud terrains with good results.Just depends on what you really want and use your vehicle for .
