285/70 vs. 285/75

Getting ready to build out our 2021 TRD Off Road and trying to decide between 285/70/17 and 285/75/17 Nitto Ridge Grapplers with the C sidewall rating.
There is aprox 1" of difference in height on these tires. I know once the tire is mounted and then has the load of the vehicle on it I will lose about 1" in height so I am leaning towards the 285/75 flavor. Being a noob to the 4Runner platform, am I going to regret this decision? I am planning on running the Eibach Pro stage 2 lift which has coil overs.

This is irrelevant when it comes to anything regarding fitment. Every tire squats under load. Both will rub, one more than the other. Both are easily able to made work with proper trimming. The 70 will require less.
 
Thanks for the not so helpful reply. Height is not irrelevant when it comes to fitment. If it was we would all be running 35s. What I was getting at is I want the bigger tire and the question was will there be a huge amount of difference with making it fit. I know there will be trimming but what else, since I am a noob, might I be missing.

I didn't say height was irrelevant. I clearly said one will rub less than the other meaning height is relevant. Toyota's rub....a lot. You'll probably need a BMC for the 75s and you won't with the 70s, pending alignment. More weight and taller tire means worse MPG and slower vehicle too, which I also realize is erroneous with this vehicle anyway to some. A lot of people stick with 285/70s for those reasons. What I said was that because the tire squats to a 285/70 size unloaded is irrelevant to how much you'd have to trim. You still have to trim to a 285/75.

My initial answer was brief and to the point. Can't deny that's how we do it in this state.

Pretty sure he meant the squat of the loaded tire is irrelevant (because it is irrelevant, bottom of the tire doesn't rub on anything but the ground).

BTW, I'm from Maine, how'd I do in fitting your stereotypes?

It's not vice versa is the problem. PA is the land of freedom a short drive away that the majority of our state wishes we had as we are forced into stricter laws on fun things and higher bills every year. It's tough to make fun of PA.
 
This is true. Your property taxes are straight up ludicrous and PA's are getting a little rough I'm hearing. But hey you've get points for "Jersey Shore" and Tooki and Pauly... wait... nevermind ;)
 
I run 285/75. How much you rub depend a lot on wheel width and offset. What are you running? For me with 9" +1 wheels it requires a BMC, a good amount of reforming and cutting the wheel well liners, fold over the pinch welds and caster between 4.5 and 5 degrees. I've a front bumper so I never had any rubbing in the front obviously
 
Nope. Right now it's stock. Pretty much trail running with this and rock crawling with our Jeep. I think I'm going to go with the 285/70 like I planned to avoid some of the craziness right now. I might get crazy in the future though :)

I agree with this as you can do some pretty hard trails with the 285/70-17's. On my Pro I did not have to trim or modify anything. Kept my mud flaps and run them on the oem Pro 7" wheel and air down to 18psi without issues. The factory trail and Pro wheel have a positive offset, which helps with clearance and rubbing issues. A negative 8.5 or 9 wheel will create some modifications. The 285/70-17's actually puts the speedometer right on. 285/70's are cheaper and much more common with many more choices in brands and load ratings. No expensive gear change required. Better performance than a 34. Only a 1/2" ground clearance gain. Can fit a full size 285/70 spare in the spare tire well. I run standard load Wildpeaks, which ride really smooth and only weigh 50 lbs per tire. Have been all over the Mojave, Eastern Sierras, and a few of the southern California mountain trails and never had any issues.
IMO, start with a 285/70. Good luck with your decision.

i found that guys video and his other one to be pretty legit.

I checked out the rest of his channel...all his videos are pretty legit. He was a bit harsh on RCI but then after he had to deal with CBI's bullshiet....he realized CBI was far worse..ROFL.

I think they should make all his video's a required viewing for noobies..LOOOL.

Yeah I agree. He's putting together a good library of content. Surpised he had so few followers. I thought his video on snorkels was enlightening too

Lol, there are some benefits to a bigger tire and lower gears. You'd be surprised how much difference they can make. That being said I agree with what you're saying. Lots of cost and effort in making the jump

Ahh the most generic Jersey joke ever. NJ is nothing like Snooki and JWoww (but we still love them, secretly).

Property taxes can be horrible or not bad. We pay for it with great schools which I'm "ok" with having two little kids. The closer you go to the city the more ludicrous it gets. I don't know why anyone wants to do that, but they'll pay double on a house and property taxes just to do it. Otherwise, NJ is actually a mostly pretty great state to live in. Stay out of the major cities and it's actually really low crime and great communities. Especially compared to what some of the other west coast guys are saying about the nonsense in Cali and Seattle. Woof.

Anyway, go with the 285/70. Way less work for similar offroad performance. You won't miss out on any trail over the extra inch of tire.
