How did I lose ride height ?

Hello,

2007 4runner 2wd V6, small lift front and rear. Was running 265/75/16 tires. According to the website those tires have a 31.7" diameter. Recently put on new tires 265/70/17 with new TRD wheels. Again according to website those tires have the same 31.7" diameter.

I didn't measure ride height before and after, but after installation I noticed the ride height decreased about 1/2-1" ! How can that happen as I didn't want to lose any height that's why I got the same diameter tire?

1. Any suggestions how best to fix? Different tires or more suspension lift?

2. If different tires, what size do I need ?

I'm gonna try to make this short, the full answer gets a little complex.

Your tire size is 265(width)/ 70 (profile, aka percentage of the width in height).

Your old tire was a 265/75, so an extra 5% sidewall.

Right off the bat, that's a 13mm difference in sidewall height if the wheels were identical. That's not huge, but the wheel width is also a factor here.

Skinnier wheels push the tread up and out a little bit, while wider wheels allow the sidewall to be angled up vs straight up and down. Do you know if the old and new wheels are dramatically different in width?

Thanks for the response. No I don't think the wheel width is different--I believe both the stock and the TRD Pro width is about 7.0". However I think you might be on to something because the wheel offset is very different. It looks like the stock 16" offset is about +30mm and the TRD Pro 17" offset is about +4mm.

I wonder if that could be the reason because the wheel/tire is pushed out further??

Where did you get the diameter sizes from, did you actually measure them both or are you going with what the tire manufacturers states?

I was going by the manufacturer Firestone specs. The old tires and new tires were both the same model just going from a 16" to a 17" (but overall diameter remained the same)

Since I can't get a definite answer as to why this would have happened, I'll probably order larger tires maybe 280/70/17 to regain ride height. Don't think I want to add additional lift since it's already lifted about 2.5" front and about 1.5" rear.

Open to any other suggestions. Thanks.

First off, give a quick look for any other stuff messing with your ride height, like worn-out suspension or tweaks. Once you're sure the suspension is all good, maybe think about trying out some different tires. Sometimes, even if they're labeled the same, different brands or models can have slightly different actual diameters.

Yes thanks for that--you're probably right. Everything was fine until I changed from a 16" wheel to 17" TRD Pro wheel. Purchased a 17" tire size with the same diameter as the 16" tire size. Even used same model Destination AT2. So I'm really at a loss here.

Will either go to 285/70/17 in the Destination AT2 or try another brand like you suggest. Thank you.
