285/75's worth it? or stick with 265/75s?

Since I got my lift the stock 265/70/16 tires look puny but I'm not a hardcore wheeler so I'm planning to run 265/75/16 Duratracs. Good all around tire size IMO and less power loss compared to running a 285 tire size (unless you regear)

Another thing to consider is the load rating. I dont think they make 285's in the c load, only d and e (mostly e). If you like that cushy ride it may sway your decision.

I have about 3"s of lift (or 2"s since mine was a tall 99') with 265's and sometimes they look a little puny. But, I use mine for mostly commuting and its nice having speed and decent fuel mileage.

If you go with a 265, get something fairly aggresive and in my opinion it looks bigger.

265/75/16

I have Revo 2 265/75's on my 00 4runner right now with a 3" suspension lift. I love the tires and had them on there before I installed the lift (only had slight rub on stock suspension). With the 3" lift the 265's look way smaller. Bigger gap, especially noticeable in the rear. I'm going to go with 285/75 16's soon. Unfortunately the 265/75/16's are not that old. Anybody in the Virginia area want to buy them?

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but I know this thread is always the first to come up on Google so I'm sure a lot of people still read through this like I did.

I had 265s on a 3" lift and while they were plenty of tire to go off-road and get over most obstacles, the look of them wasn't so nice. Didn't fill the wheel wells much and they really took away from the look I was going for. Moved up to 285 Kenda Klever m/ts recently and I can't see that I'll ever go back. Even with them being load E tires, the ride isn't bad at all and they look a thousand times better. Absolutely no power loss in my case, I've had to adjust my driving style a little bit to keep MPGs down but that's better for any vehicle in the long run anyway, and all I had to do was hammer two pinch welds (I probably wouldn't have had to do any modifications if I didn't have 1.25" spacers on before I got these tires). In the 3 days I've had them, I've already gotten tons more compliments too. IMO, the 285s are worth it.

I'm running 265/75/16 load range c with no lift and really like it. If I had another car for daily driving I would go 2-3 inch lift and 285/75/16 load range d. I took off the spacer lift mine came with because with limited flares the tires were so inset it looked dumb...spacers would have fixed it and it would have looked good but it's a daily so I'm happy with stock height.

I initially purchased 31's (265/75/16) for an upgraded tire and planned to keep it stock height or very close. Like many of us here, that didn't last.

I run 33s now (285/75/16) they weigh 5 lb's more per tire. I also recently got new wheels, which were almost 7 lb's lighter each. So it's a wash essentially. I personally noticed ZERO difference in fuel economy with the taller tires. These older Toyota's are pretty resilient at keeping their rated MPG. GRANTED! I am a 5-speed guy, but I can still knock off 20+ mpg on the freeway. That is lifted an honest 3 inches OVER 99 tall spring OEM height. So 3 or 4 inch lift, with 33's, I love the height/looks.

More so then what looks cool, you need to prepare yourself for some potential item's additionally. Track bar bracket or adjustable, extended rear brake line, lifting it obviously, alignment concerns/getting aftermarket UCA's to get it in spec, gas mileage, diff drop, rubbing, you get the point.

For a weekend warrior/budget minded person, I'd say 265's. If you have some money to spend/like tinkering and sitting up a bit higher for whatever reason, go 33's. My .02 after being in these shoes.
