285 spare tire location with KDSS

Took a look underneath my truck today. There is room in front but the tire presses against the hitch. I may air it down a bit. Guessing if my tire was a matching General Grabber or a mud terrain it may not work.

On a side note, no trimming was required in front. I have a 2.5" lift and the clearance was good.

Your first picture is timely as I'm aiming to get under the truck today and put up/in the new KO2 33" - great reference. Thanks!

Update for those who need to know:

2019 w/KDSS - 285/70/17 KO2 on Method 703 fits in the spare well without need for modifications. It's close on the KDSS, about 1/2", but no issue if you set the back and tighten it up/upward properly.

Just got back from the tire shop and i have a Falken WP 285 up there and it fits.

The shop kept telling me it was not gonna fit but I told them do it anyways, and of course it fits. And they had it at 42psi. It does touch the tow hitch on the back side so I will lower pressure down to maybe ~30 and readjust to see if I can get it to clear.

Congrats on the AT3W WP’s. Pics? Did you go E, C or SL? Thinking you got E load if they aired it up to 42psi. I had no problems with my 285 in the spare area, but, I do not have KDSS.

question for everyone, when you replaced the stock spare with your aftermarket spares, how many of you also replace the stock spare wheel?

My wife smashed a curb and so one of the new (3 weeks old) black wheels has a deep gash on it. I got quite angry, so she immediately ordered a replacement and said we could use the ****ed up wheel for the spare.

Wondering if I should take this opportunity to finally get an aftermarket spare tire to put on the "new" spare wheel or if I should just get the wheel repaired and only get the aftermarket tire, stick it on the stock spare wheel and cancel the new wheel order to save some money.

Wanted to know what you guys do. new wheel with new spare tire or just stick to stock wheel with new spare tire?

Currently running a 285/70/17 falken wildpeak at3w in the stock spare location mounted on a 17x8.5 0 offset wheel. Tight fit, but it fits.

really up to you..no wrong way to do it, as long as your spare tire size matches your other 4 tires, you can choose whatever rim you want under there.

I'm a cheap bastard so I stuck with my spare tire rim and mounted 285's on it and call it a day. To me its a insurance policy and I treat it as such.


If you buy a matching rim, you can use your spare tire in your tire rotation schedule if thats your thing.

I was thinking about the tire rotation myself, only thing is, I'd be rotating the damaged spare rim into the mix, which means the damaged rim would be visible, which is why she ordered a replacement to begin with.

Gah! I'm cheap too, which is why I'm leaning towards just getting it repaired and just slap a new spare tire on the stock spare wheel. It's just that I'll know in my heart the wheel has been damaged and that makes my OCD go f'ing mad, but again, I'm cheap....

Any updates on this info. I’m in the same situation. I have a 2023 Trd off-road premium with KDSS with stock 265/70R17 tires. I’m looking to go with a 2 inch leveling lift with 275/70R17 tires keeping the 4 stock silver wheels (so I would just be purchasing five total all terrain tires , no new wheels). Looking right now at the Toyo Open Country A/T3 or new Falken AT4W. Half of the shops says that an all terrain 275 will not fit in the spare location if they mount it on the spare wheel due to KDSS. But some say it will fit. I just got underneath and looked at what I have and there is a little bit of room with my stock 265 spare, but if it’s a tight fit with 275s, do the KDSS sway bars need a lot of that extra room to move when going off road? Thanks for any advice!

285/70 may very well fit, but what about when off-roading? I read somewhere with the movement of the axle, it will rub and may even cause damage to the KDSS sway bar?
