285s on SR5 wheels? Possible?

Hey folks,

As the title suggests, I am trying to see if I can put 285s on my stock SR5 wheels. I have tried searching and cannot find the magical combo that has the info I am looking for. While getting new wheels may be simpler, from a cost perspective, I am waiting a bit longer for those. My current tires wore uneven so am now in the market and looking to go up in size. Any insight would be great. TIA

Most 285 tires say minimum 7.5” wide rim, but there are many people here who have put them on 7” wide rims without issues.

Thanks. I am starting to get some of that feedback as well. While I may not have any issues, there would be that slight worry that something could happen when I air down, etc. The problem is that new wheels can be quite expensive when added all together with tires. First world problems haha.

Airing down isn't your issue. The skinnier rims will retain the beads better. Treadwear is your issue and it's a minimal one.


Plus the sidewalls will protect the skinny wheels even better.

Yes they will fit. I ran 285s on stock width wheels for years with no issues. Airing down to 15 psi and the tread wear was no different than on my 9" wide wheels now.
 
What kind of premature wear did you see? It would help diagnose if the tire size, pressure, or suspension issue. I just put 285's on my SR5 stock wheels a few days ago, they work fine.
 
The TRD PRO wheels are only 7in wide also. My TRD OFF ROAD came with PRO wheels and I run 285-70 -17 KO2s with no problems. Most tire manufacturers "recommend" at least 7.5 in wheels for 285s but a few say 7inches are fine. The tire shop that intalled my tires said 285 were fine on my 7in wheels, but wouldn't install any wider tires than that. I have heard of people putting 295s on 7 in wheels, but I haven't seen it myself. The standard TRD OFF ROAD wheels are 7.5 inches and could accommodate wider tires.
