285's Too Big for Stock Trail Wheels?

All this has been quite informative! I have a related question: is there any disadvantage/safety concern with going to a much wider rim than the tire size would justify? By way of example, I'm going to 275's when the stock Duelers are worn out (not long now!), and I was debating on staying with the stock rims, or moving up to a 9" rim. I want to have the flexibility to move up to 285's down the road and have the right rim. But I won't do that if there's a problem with smaller tire on bigger rim (besides looking a little funny). sorry for the thread mini-derail...

Yeah, I know that but I'm old fashion and like to decide issues based on facts. :D

How about this: If it were me, and I was going to off road in rocks and crap I would buy a wheel/tire combo that was in the median of specs. Too wide a wheel is as bad as too narrow when looking at the mechanics of how these two important components work together.

I've been running 285s on the stock TE wheels for a year now without any issues (knock on wood). On most terrain I air down to 15 psi but in the winter in deep snow I go down to 12. There is a possibility of losing a bead, but this can happen any time you're aired down on a trail and not running beadlocks. You can also puncture a sidewall or otherwise tear your tire. Being off road can be unpredictable so it's up to you to always be prepared. I carry a plug kit with me at all times, a full-sized spare, and either a Hilift or X-jack. If you have a high volume compressor you can also reseat a bead yourself.

I always thought engineers worked like this - well, of course 7" would be the min but lets tell the dumb civilians its 7.5" since they never listen to us anyways? :hello:

That's typically how it works. I would (and do) feel comfortable running 285s on the stock rims.

I ran 315's for years on 7" wide wheels and the only problem I ever had was sometimes after serious off roading I would get a slow leak around the bead.
