Hi everyone,
I'll start off with saying I'm a total noob and new to the forum; hope I'm not re-threading something that's already been asked.
I'll tell you a bit about my rig. It's a '95 4Runner 4x4 3.0 (3vze) with 102k miles. I bought it in July with 98k. I don't have much history on the car except I know that the head gasket was replaced around 96k along with new plugs. The previous owner didn't drive the car much (low miles) and guessing it probably sat w/out use for a long time.
Anyways...since owning it I've done some fixing of things that needed to be addressed to make it safe and drivable. Now working on making it run nice and reliable. Oil/filter has been changed twice now.
It has always driven sluggish which I know is expected of the 3.slow and have been getting 13-14 mpg. I know this car isn't known for being a fuel saver but I think most people get better than that?
While cruising at steady speed it would give me a misfire for a split second and at that very time it misfires the CEL flashes once and it's gone. My commute is only 10-15 minutes long and some days I'll get no misfires and some days I'll get maybe 2. Once it died completely at a red light.
In the last month I have replaced the spark plug wires because of some arching. (they were pretty fried, thought maybe that was what was causing the misfire) I replaced the rotor, distributer cap and coil.
Still getting the misfire/quick loss of power. Checked for codes and got code 12 (RPM signal).
I've read that it could have to do with the distributor, ECU, ignition coil? No idea. I looked around for any loose connections, wires, hoses etc. Not sure where to start. I do notice that the exhaust smells strong and rich.
Any insight or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
