2nd Gen 4runner in shop, need some input

Hi all,

My dad's 1990 4runner SR5 V6 is currently in the shop. To our knowledge, we thought it was a simple overheat issue along with a blown HG. The shop took apart the engine and told us that it will need some more work to get it running again. We are amateurs when it comes to cars and thought we can get some input from the community. I attached some pictures of the engine compartment.

Also, the auto repair place gave us an invoice regarding the repairs:

After parts and labor, it will come out to be around $2500
Are the prices reasonable or are we getting ripped off?

Sounds about right. You need to decide if it is worth the cost. You could just buy one that runs for that much and part out the old one.

I would say thats a good deal since its like 600 labor and you should have a good running motor for a long time.

Sounds about right. You need to decide if it is worth the cost. You could just buy one that runs for that much and part out the old one.

:iagree: i bought mine a couple years ago w/ 160K for that and she still runs great. Or, for that price you could probably buy a used 3.4 and swap that in.

Sounds like a plan to me. But by the OP's posts, they would be a little over their head for such a venture.

Research a 3.4 swap. You would be super happy with it. Worst case, try and find someone near you to help pull it off for a little cash.

The work includes rebuild of long block, water pump, timing belt,etc. So parts and labor 2500

Thanks everyone! So our family went ahead and did it. The owner discounted 300 so it came out to be 2200 for everything. Thank you everyone for the input. The T4R runs great now.
