Be glad both rears spin together. You are lacking a traction device known as a locker. Your 4runner is normal. The fact your front is spinning means your 4wd works.

Search for Toyota Lockers, there are many different systems to make all 4 tires spin in 4wd. I do not recommend running a locker in an IFS front.

Get better tires. :D

As said, that's supposed to happen. Each axle has a differential, which allows the wheels to spin at different rates when turning a corner - this is a good thing, otherwise you'd scrub all the tread off your tires in less than a year (ok, maybe not that fast). The differential is designed to send the power to the outside wheel on a turn, but when you're in a low traction situation and one wheel starts to slip and move faster than the other, this "fools" the differential into thinking you're turning a corner and it sends all the power to the wheel that just lost traction, and you go nowhere fast.

If you get better tires, you'll lose traction less often and climb obstacles better. If you've already got good tires and you're still losing traction, as said, get a locker. Start with a Spartan or other "lunchbox" locker in the rear differential, unless you've got more money than I do, in which case you should look at a selectable locker you can turn on and off at will.

Anyone put a limited slip in their IFS? less stress on it maybe? I'd like to put lockers in mine, but not if it's going to blow up my IFS

A spool or automatic locker could cause some damage if you're not careful. A selectable that you can disengage when turning is your best bet if you need to lock the front, but lots of guys go with the limited slip as a less expensive compromise. I had a Truetrac in the front diff, and to be honest if I had to do it again I would have saved up for an ARB. Maybe the limited slip would have been more helpful if I spent more time in the snow or mud, but I do most of my wheeling on the rocks, and I've been in situations where what I really needed was a locker, and the limited slip just didn't cut it.

But if you're not wheeling hard or lifting a wheel on a regular basis, I think a limited slip is a great option in front or back. Just depends on what kind of wheeling you do and how much budget you're working with.

I run a Aussie locker in my IFS with no problems. Any locker will affect your steering though. I notice that it just makes more resistance when on more solid surfaces.
If you do put a locker in your IFS just make sure you have manual hubs, that way you won't know its there when you are driving down the highway.
