2nd gen engine

Have rust free 95 with 117 k mi. With head gasket leak as diagnosed
By Toyota dealer. I've read a bit about this here and Yotatech.truck runs
Fine,no oil in coolant,no coolant in oil. Temp gauge in vehicle acted erratic,
did not overheat. I'm looking for advice on how to proceed. Too big a job
for me, do I need to find mechanic who has specific knowledge of this
engine? Thanks for any advice.

no a head gasket fix is a head gasket fix. most mechanics will tell you its not worth fixing this engine and they will find a used one in better shape

If it we're me, I'd attack it in the following manner, at a minimum:
1) install the updated Factory Toyota head gaskets
2) replace the coolant and temp sensors (easy access with head off)
3) replace heater core hoses while heads are off
4) replace the t-stat and install toyota coolant
5) have the heads sent to a machine shop to check for straightness and cracks
6) valve guides and seals should be checked and replaced if nesscessary
Without going into a diatribe, basics like the timing belt and tensioner/rollers should be done at this time. You might consider addressing the head gasket issue by getting rid of the cross over pipe and installing a set of headers. I disagree with some that the 3.0 (3VZE) is a lost cause on the head gasket issue. Toyota has upgraded a number of parts (head gasket, heads, radiator, etc) to address this issue. With proper maintenance, it is really a non-issue. You might consider finding a tech who is familiar with Toyota engines and has the proper tools and reference materials(factory manual set or the like) for the task. Best of luck with it.
