2nd Gen on the rocks

What A beast!

Finally got the stubborn beast's fueling issue figured out (stupid ground connection--aargh!), and took it on a shakedown run in the Black Hills. They have some world-class crawling routes in the Hills, and we hit one that's about a 4 on a scale of 1-5. Tye (mytyeerinpie) was good enough to get a brief video at the start of the trail. The obstacle was a nearly-vertical ledge about 3-3.5 ft. tall, with a nice hole on the left side right after it. This is my first serious rockcrawling. I guess I'm on the right path with the truck, cause it worked very well out there. Now to get some armor, and upgrade the axles for tougher stuff! Here's the link: 2nd Gen 4Runner V8, 35"s crawling some rocks - YouTube

Also got a quick flex pose to show the droop of the Trail-Gear suspension.

What a sexy BEAST!:bravo:

I'll tell you what--pick any 100 people you can find, from any background, and send them into the parking lot where my truck is parked, with instructions to find the TOYOTA 4Runner--I guarantee you they will point mine out EVERY time. Maybe you drive just an engine with wheels, but I bought a whole truck, and that truck is most definitely a TOYOTA.
- what on earth is he winging about?! If i had the time and the money (just like what combatmedic said) i would definitely, definitely up my 4Runner! My hat goes off to you BuckBut - its not easy to drop an engine into a car that's not designed to take that engine.. all the headaches and problems you would have needed to figure out, not to mention all the time and money spent doing so..you've done REALLY well my friend! and much better then most of us on here! Well done :) - and I for one am jealous!!

Wow, he threw in the "over compensating" line.... I sense some jealousy.... If I had the time & resources I would happily drop a gm block in my rig and go to town.

Just because you get a kidney transplant, are you not A REAL human?
- Agreed :D
What a d-o-u-c-h-e, I would love to have a Chevy SB in mine. Talking crap on a nice truck cuz yours is probably pathetic. Nice...
- A nice sum-up.. couldnt have said it better myself :D We should be thanking Bucknut for his effort, not blasting him for doing something a little different, that requires a LOT of skill and knowledge!

The ledge from the video

Here's a little better view of the ledge from the video, as one of the new guests prepared to crunch his Jeep on it (open diffs and low clearance didn't work well here--but he did make it, after much spinning and slamming!). Where the tall guy at the side is standing shows the height--the ledge is kind of a U shape. No, it's nothing outrageous, but it was a good first test for me and my rig. By the way, that's our intrepid forum member Bigrupp (Perry) in the foreground.

Thats friggen STEEP!

Ive noticed from being out there, then looking at the vids later, the videos DO NOT give the trails justice. It makes the trails look not as steep as they really are etc... Give credit where its due, it takes a well built rig to trech those trails.

Oops, my bad! My apologies to Mr. Jeeper, then--I know a couple of them beat themselves up pretty good (just not this one, then!).

What make a Toyota a Toyota? Or a Jeep a Jeep? Or a Suzuki a Suzuki? How much of it must remain original, what can or can't be modified to remain the brand? I have this debate with people all the time.

I know some guys who wheel a big Suzuki event. And you need to be a Suzuki to participate. They have a percentage system. And you need to list what parts on your rig are suzuki. Each part or component has a value tied to it, the points are scored and if you are not at a required minimum you can't participate.

So Engine, let's say 20%...I need to deduct from you 20%. It would still pass. haha.
It is a 80% Toyota, but 100% 4Runner.

If hes putting a bigger block in, to get more power, to allow for bigger and better wheeling, I say hes 90% Toyota 120%4runner.

I love it Buck, nice work. Sexy truck, mine's going to follow!

I now have a 350 Vortec at the shop I'm going to throw into my truck when I have the extra time/money. Or, I may just soup my 3.0 and get the complete overhaul rebuild kits for the tranny/motor, & bore the heads out to a bigger size, etc.. havent decided yet, cause atm I do still need my 14 mpg haha.

- Makes Sense ;)

I think it's baddass! 350 and all! It would be nice to cruise up the highway loaded down with the family and gear and get out of 3rd gear!!! My runner has a 22re and it's a Pig. It gets me there but it's such a dog that it's almost embarassing! As far as the type of wheeling I do though, I'd probably need to put a d60 front and 14b in the rear cause those birfs and R/P's are gonna blow up. I'm a rock crawler mainly and when I get hung up I get heavy on the skinny pedal and thats when stuff will go boom with your setup. So I geuss thats the advantage to keeping it all Toyota!

Shoot most Yotas are a hodge podge of miss matched make and models anyway by the time your done building them. At least mine always seem to be. I'm sure I'll have Chevy running gear slung under mine in the near future!

You are all TRAITORS to the TOYOTA FAMILY and will PAY for your FOOLISH CRIMES.

Toyota trucks must be kept PURE AND UNTAINTED by the evil that is DOMESTIC US AUTO PARTS.

Up against the wall, miscreants.

Thanks for the compliments! Trail Gear's 30-spline chrome moly birf's w/ six-shooter knuckles up front, chrome moly axles in rear, and a more reserved driving style will overcome those "blowing up" concerns. Toyota axles are a lot stronger than some are willing to give them credit for, and I'm not a lead-foot when wheeling--just enough to pop up on the obstacle.

I'm more impressed with those 4 cyl toyota's with the dual marlin crawlers, inching their way up everything. Those are cool. You could still like the V8's but you have to admit those marlin crawlers are cool.
