2WD Driveshaft removal

Hello,

I need some quick help with what I thought would be easy. '05 4.7 2WD, trying to remove the DS to do U-joints. Here's what we're working with at the rear section of the DS at the companion flange/pumpkin.

I can't get the nuts loose. I even tried an impact but they do not want to budge, not even an iota. IIRC, the torque spec is not considerable so they should not be that tough to remove. I initially tried to just remove the 14 mm nuts. I then tried opposing wrenches on the nut and stud (though there's no way an 8mm socket can compete with the torque of the assembly).

There's gotta be something I'm not doing correctly and I was really hoping to get this done tonight. Please tell me what you guys do to get these loose.

Also, does the factory use threadlock on those fasteners?

After putting a wrench on the nut use foot power. Lay under the truck, hold on to the wheel and use your foot. Don't laugh it worked for me on #1 & #2.

What kind of impact did you use, air or electric?

I agree on the foot power, work wonders, bigger muscles for more force.

You could also try a manual impact driver, the kind you hit with a big hammer, everyone should have one of these in their toolbox.

Recently remarried and she came with a 2008 2wd 4Runner. Trying to replace front spline seal, but can’t get the driveshaft off. I removed all 4 bolts and pushed for to no avail. There is no center support to remove. I’ve tried turning the wheels to reposition, while trying to remove and nothing is working.
How do I remove the driveshaft after removing the 4 rear bolts. Thanks

There's a ridge on the flange of the driveshaft that fits into pinion flange that usually gets corroded. In most cases you can pry it off the pinion flange but if there's a lot of rust underneath then sometimes it needs a little more persuasion with a BFH or air hammer.

Solution to remove driveshaft from stud bolts

I had to replace the Universal joint on my 2005 2wd 4.0 4runner sport edition 297,000 mile original driveshaft. After removing the 4 Nuts with a pneumatic impact wrench I was unable to pull the driveshaft forward enough to clear the stud bolts. I had the car in neutral with blocks under front tires to prevent from rolling and jacked up the rear end until the back wheels were off the ground. This helped with clearance a little but not enough to clear bolts. I decided the best option was to cut the ends off the stud bolts about 1/4". I used a dremel tool w/ cut off wheel and wore safety goggles & a welding shirt to prevent sparks from burning me or my clothes. I ended up only having to remove the un-threaded ends of two of the bolts before i was able to pull the driveshaft off. I didn't have any problem putting the bolts back on as i did not cut into the threads.
