2wd lift questions

I've got a 3rd gen t4r limited edition (the one with the fender flares and running boards) 2wd and I've wanted to put a lift or leveling kit on it for a while and now that I can actually afford one I'm thinking about it more seriously. It's currently running the stock suspension with a front grille guard, aftermarket wheels, and some semi-low-profile all-terrain tires, and all the times I took it offroading, it preformed well (except the couple of times i had to get pulled out of the mud). However I've also got a friend who I shoot the breeze with about cars and trucks and he says it's a bad idea because I don't have a solid front axle. His argument seems valid but I just wana know the possible disadvantages of putting a lift or leveling kit on a 2wd and any suggestions on good kits to get would be nice, too. Oh and it's also the 2001 model if that helps.

There is no driveline up front, so don't worry there. In the back, don't over-do it. You get too high back there and you start getting vibrations from the driveshaft angle.

I bought the OME 3" lift kit from Toytec, they sent me the wrong shocks for the back. They sent the 60027's, I ordered the 60028's. They ride horrible without about 300 pounds extra back there. Besides the rear shocks, it's a decent lift.

I'd say it wasnt worth it

if you dont have the rear e-locker. Id think some 99 tall springs and some HD bilsteins would do the trick. :satan:

Ya I'm not looking to put like a 6" lift on it o anything, just enough height to make room for some bigger tires and to have a little more ground clearance.

The 01's don't have the e-locker option. Sucks.

What kind of problems would I run into if I pu the lift on without the e locker?

it sounds like you want the lift mainly for looks - if that's the case, then go for it. You already have all terain tires, so performance wise, the lift won't do much for you, but it could allow you to increase tire size and give a little improvement off road

i have a 01 4runner 2wd amd i wanted to just put a leveling kit on it and when i did it picked the front up to high so then i ordered like a 2.5 inch lift for the back and the back still sags its like my coil spring is got weak or something i aint real sure does anybody no what i could do to lift the back up

My first 4runner was a 2wd and I lifted it. Only thing I ran into was once going offroad and gettin stuck in stupid spots while buddies went trough it like nothing. I wanted a 4wd. So my advice would be if u really want a lift to make it more capable offroad is get a 4wd. A stock 4wd can do a lot more than a lifted 2wd. Lifting it really isn't going to help a whole lot. It will give u clearance and allow bigger tires and a more flex. But that's about it

I have a 2000 2wd with the OME 3 in lift kit. it does well. but like spenedwrds said, 4wd would do much better. I wish every day that my runner was 4wd. Dont get me wrong, the lift will definitely help with clearance and stuff offroad, but nothing beats having 4wd.

well i aint really wanting a big lift on it but i want to just get rid of a saggy ass so since i am gonna haft to do something to it i want to put a little lift on it but i dont no what kind to get but i want about a 3inch lift or so

I've got a 2wd that's been lifted for a few years the only thing I've run into is I had to replace the U joint

Here's my 97 2wd with 3.5" of lift. Specs are in my signature. I have recently purchased a wrecked 98 4wd with a locker and am in the process of converting mine to 4wd.

Got the spring set up from classifieds here for about $75 shipped as I recall. Did it a few years ago. The springs barely had a scuff on them. And end result for me was a little over an inch and a quarter all the way around. But my shocks were stock and pretty dead so that may be why it was over the one inch mark.
