I've got 200k miles on my 2006 V-8 Ltd. 4Runner and there has never been any problems with it being in 4 wheel drive full-time.
There's no wheel hopping, no uneven tire wear, and no jerking or lurching in a tight, slow turn, like exiting a parking space. There has never been any mechanical issues with transmission (or the engine or any other drive-train component.)
It has been an incredible vehicle that I have driven in all of the lower 48 states and it has traveled from the heights of the Rockies to sea level at Key West. And even to below sea level in Death Valley.
I wish I could go buy another one brand new, I'd do it all over again.
