3.0 barely runs

I parked my 93 3.0 4runner in the driveway last night. It was running fine. Came out this morning and it started, but was barely running. Idle was maybe a few hundred rpm. It would not rev up and I couldn't get it to move.

I have had the check engine light on for awhile. Codes 25 and 26. It has also been idling a bit rough lately. I chocked it up to needing a tuneup.

Any ideas where to start?

Mine did the same thing this morning! Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but mine quit doing it after it warmed up some.----Metalguy

So let me update and make clear what the issue is. The issue is not the codes, they have been there for a couple months and the 4runner has been running fine. I just added those in case someone thought they could be related. The issue is that suddenly the engine is missing so bad that it cant even move the vehicle.

It has spark, or at least intermittent spark because it will run, it just wont rev over 300 rpm or so. The fuel pump is working. I have also checked fuel pressure....that leads me to this question.

Is 51 psi going to cause the engine to not run? Well it runs, barely, just won't go over 300 rpm.

The FSM says static fuel pressure should be 38-44 PSI. I have 51psi. FSM says replace fuel regulator if the pressure is too high.

Any thoughts?

Code 26 is running rich yes? I forget. Check your AFM and o2 sensor.

Yes I think your right. I miss wrote the codes in my original post, it was 25 and 26. One is too rich, one is too lean. Again, it has had those codes for some time and has been running fine. I will still check the AFM and o2 sensor though.

Well after a bunch of testing and fiddling I think the timing belt has jumped. During one point when I reset the computer and re-started the engine to check for codes, there was screeching/rubbing sound coming from under the timing cover. So I guess I am going to do a timing belt tomorrow. Funny thing is, that was the first thing I thought of when it happened.

This confirms my suspicions. I lined up the timing marks just to double check and sure enough the drivers side cam slipped two teeth. I'm going to get eom parts ordered and do everything next weekend.

Bummer. I hope you have no bent valves then! Mine was just running rough at startup, and after it warms a bit is just fine. It has done it a couple of times now. At least you found the cause! ------Metalguy

Well I should have been done with this today. I can't get the idler pulley out without removing the cam gears. And I can't break the bolts lose on the cam gears. I made a couple tools to hold the cam gears but I bent both tools. Is there a trick to removing the idler without removing the cam gears?

I know you isolated this particular trouble to the timing belt, but I just want to get back to this part...

I'm guessing it's NOT been running fine. With the fuel pressure reading too high when you checked it, and your engine throwing codes for too much and too little fuel, I think your fuel pressure regulator is shot. Depending on how long you've been driving it like that, your O2 sensors could be going or gone too, and you're working on burning up your cat next. Once you're done wrestling with the timing belt, it might be time to take care of your FPR or whatever else is causing your motor to throw those codes.

Kid I agree there is something else going on. I checked the O2 sensor and it checks fine. Up until the timing belt it's been running good but it's been idling a little rough. After pulling the sparks plugs that's understandable. I am actually surprised it ran at all. The plugs were so worn away. They were I bit gummed up too. They have probably been in there for 100k plus miles.

Anyway. I will getting it running and tuned up and go from there.

Well I got everything buttoned up and it runs fine. I am having trouble getting the air out of the cooling system though. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on. Hopefully tomorrow I will be back on the road.

Good you will have her back driving soon. This has me thinking I need to change my timing belt. I have no idea when it was last changed! Mine runs fine, but you never know. -------Metalguy
