Yea i was thinking fuel filter too. Looks original.... and with 250 000km on it. But i still have a hunch the Pump might be weak. I put the gauges on it and at idle it reads 38 to 40psi... which is in spec... and when i dissconnect the regulator line it goes up 10psi... again in spec. But when i go for a drive it drops to about 20 psi or les and bogs out and almost stalls....
did you figure out your problem ours seems to be doing that as well .......we have replace fuel filter, air mass flow sensor, plugs, oil change, front brakes?????
Vehicle stutters each time the gauge reaches 1/2 tank. After I fill up beyond 1/2 tank the 4 runner works fine, no problem. I've already changed the fuel filter, vacuum hoses, had a tune-up, but the problem persists. Anyone else run into this?
I see its fixed but have a couple minutes to kill for future generations
are these pumps diaphragm based ? You could alway get a pin hole in your diaphragm and give birth to all sorts of problems. Thats basically why I'm here.
If there is a half empty / half full problem; never been in the tank but is there a plastic dip tube could be cracked ? Sucking air.
Do you think the fuel gauge is accurate ? Is "half full" actually empty ( a realistic optimist)
gtg_banbang,
I've never been in the tank either. Some sort of hole/ gash is what I'm thinking.
I hear I need to take the seats out in order to access the fuel pump in the tank.
Appreciate your inputs..
I've never R&R'd my gas pump, but I looked through that access hole under the right back seat. There's a couple wires there, perhaps to allow you to drop the tank without tearing them, but it sure looks like the tank has to come down to extract pump
I had to go through our fuel system a while back on our 4runner(1990). Had to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump. I'd recommend getting the tank seals from Toyota, as they have upgraded them to handle the ethanol. Also replaced the regulator, filter, relay, and injector with housing seals/o-rings. I posted pics a while back of the whole process, especially the tank drop.
Best of luck with it.
