Fuel Pump change for preventative?

So for those of you that had the fuel pump fail, how many miles was that? Im diving deep into maint and at 276k miles im kinda thinking change the fuel pump too since I frequent deep backcountry far from my house and its not an easy on the trail fix.

So just curious on what people opinions are on this?

Probably a no brainer if you are dropping the tank. Let's face it, everything on these trucks is old as piss.

I've thought about this as well. I want to drop the tank to replace the parts to fix the fuel gauge not being accurate so when I do that i'll probably just replace the pump at the same time so I don't have to drop the tank again in the future.

I did (hired it done, actually) a preventative replacement of the fuel pump on my previous '91 Toyota truck when it got to around 200K miles. My 4Runner is now at 212K (and 28 years) and I'm feeling the urge. Don't want to get stranded or have to have it done in a strange town with questionable parts.

Yes do it. Get oem or denso and make sure it comes with the filter sock. Maybe replace the fuel filter while your at it.

Never had a fuel pump issue up to 325k miles when it was upgraded for the supercharger install...

If you do replace it, only get an OEM pump or Denso pump. Basically anything else will be less reliable than what is already in there.

I mostly replace the fuel pumps if I have to drop the tank. With the age of thse rigs now. If you still have the original fuel pump in with 200K plus on the clock. Its worth just swapping it out as they will not last forever. I would rather replace it before it leaves me stranded somewhere. However, that is just my thoughts on it.

Fuel pumps don't seem to go out on the 3rd gens as often mines at 257k with the original one.

Replaced mine at 215k miles. It was still working but I was chasing a random stalling issue when offroad. Somehow changing the pump made that problem go away.

Replaced mine at 380000 KM (236000 miles). It failed on me while driving back on the hwy after a wheeling trip.

Worth it to just replace it, especially if you use it for a lot of backcountry travels. When it dies, it dies suddenly and will leave you stranded.
