3/1/09 Gorman (Hungry Valley) Trip

A few of us are getting a group together for March 1st which is a Sunday for Hungry Valley, off the 5 Freeway.

MODS: I did not post this in the SoCal group area because this is a mix between Socal/NorCal members, and all are welcome.

Now that it looks like we have at least 4 of us rolling out, should we get meeting time/place in the thread? I figure it's going to take about 3.5 to 4 hours for me to get down there from Bay Area so I might go out the day before and stay over night - basic supplies only since we'll be wheeling the next day but not sure yet.

Getting psyched to meet up with you all!

When Blair and I go, we usually meet there around 10 or 11 am at the back entrance. Somewhere around that time is good.

Do any of you have a CB besides Blair and I? We have extra FRS radios if not.

I'll be picking up a CB before the trip. Which brand do you suggest? I see that you have a Cobra 75 CB Radio. Is that the minimum I should have?

Blair and I use the Cobra 75

It has everything inside of the mic, without the box. Anything by Cobra is good though. You will need an antenna for any of those. If you want to go the really easy route you can always just pick up one of these handhelds.

It all depends how serious of a setup you want. If you don't want to deal with the antenna on your roof then the handheld will suffice. We had ours hooked up to an antenna, but it works without it.

There's a link in my signature for how to install the Cobra 75.

The antenna we use is the Wilson5000 and we both have the short load adapters on the whips, so they are much shorter. The normal Wilson5000 whip is massive.

I do not have a CB have been using some highend walkie-talkies with the smaller groups or one-off peeps that I have gone with to date - no plans on changing that prior to our trip.

I think 10:00 - 10:30 is a good meeting time any challenges to that? Also, it looks like we'll be meeting up on the West side of 5:

There is a big dirt lot right where Pyramid Lake Rd meets Hungry Valley Rd, that is where Josh and I usually meet and its a nice big area so we don't have to just park on the side of the road.

So basically right where the marker is

Actually, TaxGuy, since we will all be on the FRS radio's anyways, you might want to look into a good set of those instead of the CB. Unless you will be with serious offroaders frequently, you'll almost always be using the FRS radios. The Motorola Talkabouts are great. Look into them. Make sure they have the option to have a channel and sub channel. The Motorola Talkabouts have this feature.

TheTaxGuy, did you read my post about getting a good set of FRS radios over the CB since that's what we will be using, and what you will be using 90% of the time for future trips?

Yes sir! I got a set of Motorola Talkabouts. They are supposed to have a 20 mile range...but we all know that the range will most likely be limited to 1 mile, tops.
