We are currrently on the east coast in New England so I have no issues with our 2000 with the 3.4 for daily use. I get a consistant 17.5 mpg avg. and no problem with power in our 4x4 5sp. However, we'll be moving to NM in the next few years and at 6,000' + I'm wondering if the stock 3.4 w/automatic 4x4 is enuf to haul us around at higher elevations. We don't plan on towing anything just the a camping load in the Runner for up in the hills. I have 4.7 in the Tundra but the mileage bloze, usually in the 12's so I'm happy with a 3.4 if it will do the job. Any opines?

I have a 3.4, live at 7000' and commute to 9500'. I think it has enough power for what I do.
I can't take advantage of the really short passing lanes, but I can still cruise at the speed limit up hills on the road to work. And I still get 18 mpg average (bad going to work, great coming back).
I only have 265/75/16, so that might make a difference compared to someone on 285's.

Normally aspirated engines loose 3% power per 1000 ft in elevation. You can make it All up and some with a blower - good excuse to do it! :cowboy:

Proves that these vehicles are flexible almost everywhere. That's as good fuel mileage as I get, better actually. Drop a few tire sizes and it may even get better!
