3.4 turns over but won't start

Truck's been running fine all day and when I attempted to start it, it fired up as usual but immediately died. Now when I turn the ignition the engine cranks over as usual but it's not firing. Havnt had time to diagnose if it's missing fuel or spark.

All fuses are good and have appropriate power

I swapped the EFI relay with the tail light relay

Fuel pump, spark plugs and wires are about a year old

That's about as far as I've gotten. More tomorrow. Any other suggestions? Wish I had a code reader

Check your vacuum lines. When I did my injector swap recently, we tried to start it without all the vacuum lines and Intake completely buttoned down, and the truck reacted exactly the same way. Maybe a vacuum line popped off?

Hope it's nothing serious...... :)

Normal driving and my check engine light has.been on for over a year. The P0420 never hurt it.

P0420 for over a year?
Could be a totally clogged cat or an O2 sensor that is totally shot.

Clogged cat, engine can't breathe. if the engine can't breath out, It can't inhale the gas/air. No inhaled gas/air, no explosion.

Shot O2 sensor and the computer wont allow the engine to run.

Bad fuel pump? I know you said it was a year old BUT...

Fuel and spark first. Then go from there.

To add to what Gerdo said, was it an OEM fuel pump (Denso) you put in there last year?

Got spark and no fuel. Pump works with my drill battery. White/black wire is ground and its good. Blue/orange wire is 12v and has nothing. Right now im searching for the circuit opening relay. Passenger kick panel?

I would get a detailed repair manual. I have a chilton for my 4runner. You can always supply direct power to the pump and see if it turns on. Time to get out the electrical tools

So everything kept.checking good up to the ECM. Had only 2v coming out green/yellow wire to the circuit opening relay (which I never found). I removed the ECM and took it apart to inspect it, looked good, reinstalled it and boom she fired right up. Guess it was loose connecror. Oh well, hope it doesnt happen again

Good job.

A poster on YT was having their 4runner sputter and die on them. The problem turned out to be that the ground below the diagnostic port on the upper manifold was loose.

I had a similar ground problem on my old 91' P/U 22RE. Everything is nice and tight on this one though. Seems like I never get to leave my garage, wife's starting to get a lil jealous!

Similar Issue

I have a pretty similar issue on a 99 4R I’m working on. Gave up and towing it to the dealership today. The truck was sitting for a few months, started and ran for 20 minutes and then it wouldn’t start again. Fuel pump has power but it appears the injectors and spark is disabled (no spark and I don’t believe fuel is leaving the injectors). Checked fuses and inspected the ECU. Hoping it’s something small I’ve overlooked. Any ideas?

I deal with this 3 or 4 times a week....it always ends up being the fuel pump disable switch I installed...

is this like 5 years old?

Well, the dealership hasn’t been able to figure it out either. They said to just take it to the scrap yard. Lol, unbelievable the dealership can’t figure it out either. They tried replacing the ECU and it didn’t work

I’ve been trying to find out more info, but I’ve read a crankshaft position sensor could go without throwing a code. This one sat for a few months, then the battery died. The guy replaced it and it started right up. Ran for 20 minutes and he went back to start it up and it wouldn’t turn over. There’s fuel pressure at the injector rail (loosened the line and had someone crank the engine, gas shot out). Does it make sense that the crankshaft position sensor would appear that the ECU and the rest of the engine is disabled?

Only code it had previously was a random misfire code but the spark plugs are going on 150k. Not sure on the timing belt age and if it could slip to the point of causing a no spark/no fuel situation. Crankshaft position sensor might be the issue but not sure how to confirm it. It’s stuck at the dealership so perhaps I could ask them.

If your plugs have 150k on them the first thing I would do is a simple tune up. Aka plugs and wires and air filter.
