30 Reasons why my 2nd Gen 4Runner is better than a 1st Gen

...But what is comes down to is 2nd gens are superior. :happy: I have the best of both worlds, a 2nd gen 4runner and a solid axle. haha

Atleast we still have a real tailgate though. Unlike the third gens.

One of the reasons I kept the 2nd gen and sold the 3rd gen. The window is a pain, but having a place to sit when the truck is packed or in the snow is nice. Heck, we changed my son's diapers on it on road trips, and now it lets me pack another row of firewood, bringing the capacity up to about a third of a cord.

That factory locker on the 3rd gen would have been fun. Maybe the '98 might have driven ok after replacing the suspension and tires instead of bouncing at 70mph. Instead, the next owner claimed the locker didn't work or even exist, and yanked out all the electronics for it before asking for help. Blah!

That's actually one of my least favorite things about the truck. Dropping the tailgate makes it hard to reach stuff in the back. I'd love to have one like those Honda trucks or whatever they are that have a gate that drops or swings sideways.

Just what I am thinking, and me at 230lbs and my roommate over 300lbs I wouldn't trust that gate to hold us(or the glass to hold up inside it). And I think it will be much harder on the dogs to get in/out.

But again I haven't had it long enough to hate it or love it.

Meh it feels like its in the way on my 91..... but I haven't had her long enough to really like it or hate it yet.

You definitely don't use it like you should! Me (250lb of man) and my 300lb roommate have sat on there for hours. Its a great portable bench. Great for using at my local range. I've been able to put ammo cans and guns on the tailgate. There are no shocks to give way and not hold the hatch up. Makes it easier to get to things on your roof rack.

Ive never had a problem with the tailgate. I took my 4runner to a few football tailgates where we had 4 or 5 people on it at the same time and it never had an issue. Glass never broke or anything, still shuts and closes just fine.

Never had a problem with weight on my tailgate, hell I backed into a cement pillar with the window down and the glass was untouched

Yeah, I realize the number of similarities between 1st and 2nd gen 4Runner, but always wondered why they each didn't have their own respective threads. I think the 1st gen is more classic than the 2nd, chronologically speaking. Oh well, both are still cool.

Kind of a pain though if you ever have to load anything you gotta roll the damn glass down first. Try doing that with your hands full...it's not easy.
