30k service.....What do you guys think?

I called toyota to see what the 30k service entails. Aside from the basic oil change, tire rotation, air filter they do the spark plug and the diff fluids...

For $900!

I'm having new tires put on in 2 weeks and i asked them about the service. They told me the diff fluids were a good idea along with the oil change but plugs shouldn't need to be done at 35k...

what do you guys think?

Never ask a dealer for the "x,000 mile service". You'll get a high price on a package containing a lot of stuff you don't need.

Consult the Maintenance Guide and get service department(s) to quote for the specific things that it says need to be done at that interval.

I think axles and t-case is truly a good idea. The V6 does not come with long-life Iridium type spark plugs and it's recommended to change them at 30k. The V8 has long life plugs. More on a long-life plug for the V6: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/476208-post8.html

Buy your own Mobil 1 or other oil/gear oil. Your local Speedee will do it all for about $100.00. Have Toyota tighten and inspect and change the plugs air filter and cabin air filter if they need it. Probably around $200.00 go through the list service by service. 900 is sillymoney.

I priced out 60K service at my dealer and was quoted about $500. I asked for a printout of the services that were included, that list included a LOT of "inspect" tasks, not a lot of "replace" tasks. I could not believe they wanted that much money for that little amount of work.

$900 is absurd.

I am in Norcal and about to get my 30k Service done at Capitol Toyota. Got Quoted $388+taxes on parts for all 30k items including Spark plugs + Coolant change. They are also running a special this month. if you bring your car during the weekdays after 4pm, you get an additional 20% off. with that discount, it will come out to around $340 out the door.

I think if you are somewhat handy and not afraid to get a little dirty.....do it all yourself! Rotating tires is simple, you'll just need jack stands.....the spark plugs, diff/transfer case fluids and engine oil can ALL be accomplished with simple tools. (you will want a small pump to "pump" the fluid into your front and rear diff as well as your tc.......about $5 at auto part store). All of these tasks have a "sticky" here.

A big plus: knowing you did it yourself gives one a great feeling of satisfaction (and knowing you save a ton of coin).

IF you are NOT handy and/or do not have time, take it to a trusted independant shop. Doing this SHOULD cost less than the dealer.
