is your software converting regular CAD files and slicing them, or is it a completely different file type?

I just bought a dual head 3d printer, and a 3d scanner, but honestly man, i have n o idea what to do with it.

After I finish whatever model I'm designing in Solidworks, I save it as a .stl (StereoLithography) file. Then I drag it into a program called ReplicatorG that does all the slicing and G-Code generation. Lastly, I take the generated G-Code file and save it to an SD card which my printer reads from.

On the other hand, if you just want to print .stl files you find on the internet (I recommend Thingiverse), you can jump straight to dragging it into RepG (I think it is a free program).

Thanks man, I will check it our. I am still waiting on delivery of my printer. I just don't know a single thing about CAD...literally have never touched it. So i am thinking i am wasting my money.


I bough the ZIM Pro Dual head printer. it has a pretty small print area, but I like that it can print to colors, or it can print a water soluble support structure as its is printing a task.

The problem with 3D scanning is, they are not as accurate as one made in a print file. Sure they will look close, but from my experience, they lack a lot of precision.

im sure as time goes on, the technology will get better and get the prints more accurate to the files. Although improving accuracy will definitely cost more $$$.

The setup I got was pretty reasonable. Far from the cheapest on the market, but for under 3k I got the dual head printer and the 3D scanner complete with Ipad Mini


Food for thought.....I intend to scan my 4runners and make small exact replicas of them. I wonder would people pay to have replicas if they're cars made? It's only 7" unless I do it in 4 parts, then I can do a 1:18 scale of my truck.

What does the trim look like? It may not be too hard to design from scratch based on the dimensioning.

I agree, that sounds like a great project! I was actually trying to design a 4runner model on Solidworks today using front, side, and top view pictures. It's gonna be a little harder than I thought...

I will scan my 4th gen and send you the file once the rest of my crap shows up. Then you can see what you can do with the file. I suspect the biggest issue will be getting top and bottom view. But we will see.

I've actually never really looked into a 3D printing forum. All of the information I have used over the past 6 months has been mainly on YouTube. When I was a newbie and in the market for a 3D printer, I mainly relied on Amazon.com reviews and more YouTube videos to make my purchase decision.

Those look fairly geometric, and therefore easier to design from scratch rather than scanning. I would give it a try, but I don't have a '06+ 4th gen to take measurements from :shrug:

If you have ZERO experience, I have half as much. But at least you are familiar with modifying these file types, something I know nothing about.

In other news, I finished another print today. This is the beginning of my improved cup-holder design; basically just a platform to test the fit of my measurements. The 3 slots on the top and bottom of the piece don't line up exactly with the tabs in the cup-holder tray, so I'll have to do some more tweaking before continuing....

I actually do have some clear plastic to print with. It ends up being more translucent/frosted looking, but it lets a cool glow through with LEDs.
