3ed Gen. Gas Gauge says "E" but I just filled it!

My 99 4Runner says empty but I just filled the tank. The next time I stop and start again the gauge says its full. Then, it will say I have a half tank. I know somethings is going bad but is it the "sending unit" or "gauge" itself? HELP!

It's a common problem with 3rd gens unfortunately.

I'm having the same problem with my 98. I figured it may be the sending unit as it started when my better half started driving it more than me when I got my Lincoln and its out of gas every time I get in it. I figure it's corroded up.

We fix them all the time at the shop.
