3rd Gear Shifting Issue (not seat / bushing)

Hey guys,

my 1st gen 4 Runner ran fine for the first 4 weeks after I bought it. Last week it started having occasional problems.

Problem: :help:
Shifting into 3rd gear does not work correctly in 60% of all attempts.
It feels like the the sift lever does not go the complete way but gets obstructed close before its final position.
When releasing the clutch, it makes a loud grinding noise in one half of the attempts and it forces me to select another gear before trying a second time.
In the other half, there is "only" a small stroke / hit that I feel but it works fine.

Situation improves if idle thrust is in maximum position (knob turned CW completely), but not resolved completely.

Background:
Transmission and clutch have been replaced by the previous owner 6 month ago. I do have the receipt but there is no warranty left (due to exceeded mileage limit).

What I have done:
- Replaced gear shift lever bushing AND seat due to advice in several forum threads (thanks!). Gear shifting has improved, however, it did not resolve my problem.

- Checked any interference with shift handle (According to a maintenance manual's suggestions: "Cause: floor shift, interference between shift handle and console of floor cut out. Action: Adjust console or cut out floorpan to eliminate interference". But could not find any obvious interference.

- In the meantime I tried to avoid the 3rd gear whenever possible, to avoid deterioating the situation even more...

What next:
- Could it be a worn syncro?
Is it the same syncro for 3rd and 5th gear? 5th gear is working absolutely fine.
- How do I find out which transmission type is installed in my runner?

Thanks for any advice! :thanks:

PS I reckon this could be a "common" problem, however I could not find a thread offering any suitable solution (besides replacing bushing and seat) that would work for my problem. If you have one in mind, I would be happy if you share a link :thanks:

Sounds like you have a syncro issue. Have you tried to change the trans fluid? If the fluid is dirty you can try to clean up the trans by running ATF in it for a VERY short period of time to clean up the inside, or you can just do a drain and fill but add some syncro mesh. Other then that you will probably have to rebuild or replace the transmission

Thanks Tim!
Not yet, I will check the tranny fluid today after work.

Why would ATF would clean up the manual transmission? (Have no idea about the differences, sorry).
And what would be a very short time? I am currently only communiting to work 15 minutes each morning & afternoon and could control the time quite well.

...changed transmission oil today and smooth shift additives as well...still no improvement...

any suggestions?
