3rd Gen 4Runner Lift Information and FAQ's

So which springs are these? They are on the back of my sanoran steel lift but I didn't see the color code on the first page to match. It's grey, white, double purple from the top down.

6252's. Its in the post that you quoted. And don't bother with the 5150's.

sorry i just realized that was the part number... i feel dumb, thanks. yeah i just was talking to COB and he said that another guy DOUS had the 5150s and snapped off the res, because it twisted and got caught on the frame... so should i get two of the 6252s or one 6252 and one 6253? SS says get the combo and put the longer one on the passenger side(dont know why). also what would be the problem with buying the 6253s and getting that extra .5" or length/travel? im gonna be running 8 wraps and probably at some point go to 9 wraps

Nope you want the same shock for both sides. Also. the 5125 are a eye to eye mount so you will need a stem adapter like what toytec sells with the shocks. If i were you, i would just buy them from toytec as they also have the correct 3/4 bushing you need.

That or you could buy the 5100 for the FJ/4th gen which is a bit longer.

do you guys sell just the stud adapter? i can get them for under $80 a side, i would consider buying them from you but it would cost me a lot more, and id lose my free shipping for my front tundra struts(need to spend a certain amount to get the free shipping) and still have to pay shipping and a higher price for the shocks from TT. i will be buying some rear lower control arm armor, the adjustable panhard bar, diff drop and eibach front lift coils(as soon as they are back in stock) -i dont think im gonna want my TRD tundra front coils after all, so i will be spending some $$ with you guys soon

Hey guys

So I've been researching for about a month now and have dug up a majority of the information I need, but I still have a few questions.

I have a pregnant wife and she has a mouthful to say about my 4runners' current ride. My coils are severely fatigued (bump stops resting on one another without load) all the way around and struts/shocks are sweating, both due to overloading etc. I am weighing my options on an all new suspension setup. I've got 2 4runners but the one in question is a 97 SR5 2wd 3.4l Please bear with the long post.

I have honed in on two options:

#1 OME 880/890 and Bilsteins

#2 Coilovers and OME rear (Toytec's" Ultimate lift kit" Ultimate lift kit for 96-02 4Runner - Toytec Lifts: Toyota Lift Kits: FJ Cruiser Lift Kits, Tacoma Lift Kits, Tundra Lift Kits, 4 Runner Lift Kits, Sequoia Lift Kits, Toyota Truck Lift Kits)

I have questions regarding both, so here they are:

With the OME setup has anyone here developed sag/fatigue with the 890 rear coils overtime? If so as bad as stock fatigue? I've already dug this up and it did not answer my qs http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/51198-ome-890-light-duty-rear-coils-weak.html http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/60673-what-rear-springs-run-890-891-a.html
Will loading the 890 down with say 600 plus pounds (full passenger load and gear) every year or so fatigue them permanently?

I am hesitant to go with the 891 due to there not being a "HEAVY CONSTANT LOAD (660LBS TO GVW)" and stiffening the ride too much for the wife. Ratings for OME coils http://arbusa.com/uploads/PDF/accessorizeYourRig/toyota4Runner.pdf

Can the 4600 series bilsteins front and back work with the OME 880/890 coil setup with the amount of lift (1.25" front and 2.5" rear) I will be getting on my 2wd?
I couldn't glean an answer off here: Toyota 4Runner Handling Modifications Shocks

Lastly with the coilover setup is it even worth the 300-400 $ more when its a 2wd and obviously no wheeling is happening. All I am looking for is a comfortable ride for my wife, and I figure since i need new coils struts and shocks mind as well give it a little lift. Thanks you guys

FJ Cruiser rear coils

can anyone confirm that these work on the rear of 3g resulting in 2" -2.5"s of lift? are the dimensions the same as a 3g specific coil or would it require a larger perch? Thanks.

BUMP id also like to know/ I think I might just give it a try so we all know for sure.

Im trying to put together a lift. I was looking at FJ80s in the rear, and the Toyteck coils in the front. I am planing on adding a bit of weight in the future. bumpers and rack along with gear. so I was thinking id switch out springs to OME in the future and was wondering if they would work on the coils? I would assume they would, I don't want to crank the could up all the way. My thoughts are that with the OME springs I can keep them at a mid hight and keep ride quality with the extra wight.

Also I have a 99 SR5 with the tall springs. Am I really going to see 3in of lift?

lift 4runner

hi guys i want to know more or less how much its gonna cost me to lift my 4runner up 2 or 3 inch. ? and also what u recomend 2, 3 may be 4?

Intruder from the 5th Gen group :hello:

I have been thinking about getting a front leveling spacers from ToyTec.
After reading some of the details on the first page, it sounds like this maybe not a good idea in the long run.

Current state: I have stock 5th gen, which I didn't have a problem with the stock clearance. After getting some sliders installed, I have lost a couple of inches.

What I would like: To regain some of the clearance and maybe a little more. Nothing crazy.
Would like to keep XREAS suspension.

with getting a spacer lift, whether Daystar all around or Front Toy Tec. Damage my springs/suspension over time?

Will I gain any actual clearance on the trails? As I have read that it's mostly for aesthetics.

Thanks!

If i go Tundra Coils/shocks front with Landcruiser Coils/shocks rear, would it be neccessary to drop the diff? Or does that not change the angle and pressure on the Cv's?

walked outside and got a good look at my 4runner after finishing my lift at 1am last night....not much help in Southeastern, KY...so i did this with lil help from by standers and " those ppl that help that only cause MORE PROBLEMS!" :boxer:

things done:
3' Toytec Lift w/ billys Eibach springs, 890 OME
Panhard drop bracket
Diff Drop
Tacoma LBJ ITRE OTRE
Sway bar Links Front & rear

**With the help of LOTS of Liquid wrench, sandpaper, THC:p, 500 degree spray paint, blood & missing skin i have this!!!!! WELL WORTH IT!!!

OH YA thank you T4R.org for all the info i have gathered from here to do all this stuff to my 4runner i have NEVER worked on anything like this by myself would always just pay someone to do it!!! STUPID AND NOT FUN!!! Thanks Heather your have been great the whole time!!!

I think they are the heavy load OME front springs but they are not rear ones for sure my front was ordered built so I know they don't go there

Sonoran Steel 1.2 vs. Toytec Ultimate

Alright guys, this is my first post. Not trying to start a war between members, but I have a '98 SR5 5-speed that's begging to be lifted and I'm on the fence between the Sonoran Steel 1.2 package and the Toytec Ultimate with the Billstein upgraded shocks.

As far as I can tell the kits are pretty comparable except the SS package has the adjustable trac/panhard bar and extended rear brakeline included. The OEM bushings up front are a nice touch since I want to replace all the bushings when I install the lift too.

I know a lot of people on this forum run both setups... Is anyone NOT HAPPY with their lift choice? Are the Tokiko rear shocks in the 1.2 kit half decent vs. the Billsteins offered with the Toytec kit front and rear?

Also, if I am to go with the Toytec I'm wondering which OME Coils would work best for me (890 or 891).I plan on using my T4R mainly for driving around town (I don't have a commute to worry about) and some weekend wheeling, but I want to have it set up right. I plan on adding a lot of steel with bumpers, rock sliders and skid plates eventually but for now just want to get the lift and some 33's on there...

Any input (well, any intelligent input) is greatly appreciated.

~Rant On~

Since this is the thread that gets referred to when newbies ask about lift information, I believe there needs to be information within the first post in regards to what also needs to be done to the vehicle to make it a dependable DD. I can not be the only one that has had to add additional parts to a 3rd gen runner to cure issues brought about because of the lift.

There are a myriad of threads that pop up about a recently lifted runner complaining about wandering or vibrations. With subsequent posts suggesting to check or replace almost every piece in the front end including pulling the steering column apart to either drill and drive in a roll pin, or tack weld the steering shaft. The proper fix is to restore caster to the front end and there is not enough adjustment in the OE cams to do this after lifting. The only options are to either max out the cams and live with it, or aftermarket upper arms. The cost of these arms needs to be factored into the overall cost of a lift. I realize some folks are content to deal with the wandering, some may not. But those looking for information need to be made aware they will loose the ability to bring the caster back into manufacturer spec and not be told they need to start replacing parts that may not be bad. Look at the alignment sheet and see where the caster sits after getting it aligned.

Second is vibrations. Again, a multitude of posts asking about balancing, did they use the proper adaptor on a specific balancing machine, are the tires ok etc. The real issue is the fact that rear pinion angle needs to be rotated up and on the 4runner, the only way to do this is to make the upper or lower arms adjustable. Ideal rear pinion angle on a double cardan shaft is 0-2 degrees. 0 is best but a little can be figured in for axle wrap. Since we have a 4 link set-up, we will get almost no axle wrap. With 890 springs in the rear of my rig, I have about a 6 degree difference between the slope on the shaft and the slope on the rear pinion. And thats with a little bit of weight in the rig, it may be closer to 7. This will cause high speed vibrations and will destroy the rear u joint. Eventually it will eat the pinion bearings and the output bearing in the Tcase.

Total to address these 2 issues can cost between $700 to $1000, depending on which route one goes. I feel this information needs to be made as readily available as which LC springs give what amount of lift.

~Rant Off~

I realize not everyone is as sensitive to issues like this as I am. But these do effect the long term durability of these vehicles. I chased a couple alignments prior to figuring out it was the lack of caster due to the lift that was causing the sloppy steering and wanderin. And now that that I have systematically eliminated all other points of vibration in the rear, it comes down to the pinion angle. Neither of the fixes to these 2 issues is inexpensive.
