3rd Gen 4Runner Lift Information and FAQ's

I broke some death sticks last time I changed shocks, and went for the HF
clam shell compressor. It's still a little sketchy, since it's really made for struts
and not coilovers. If I had access to a coilover setup, I'd use that.

Anyone have their Toytec springs on the 3rd perch of their Tundra 5100s? I'm curious what the hub-to-fender measurement is and how stiff it rides
I know there's way more than a couple of us using this set up yet finding posts on it seem to be a challenge, and 99% of those who have posted are using the 2nd clip setting :frusty:

Ahhh I see. I was thinking I could find some used ones at a LKQ (pick a part) for $38 a piece...but I've looked at 6 now and none of them has the right colors. I was hoping to fabricate a front and rear bumper set to hold winch and spare tire, which would help with weight. Granted that would be further down the line maybe in a few months.
The 2WD 4Runners are a few hundred pounds lighter up front. If you are dailying the 4Runner, don't go too high... rear springs of choice, front just lift with the notches on the 5100's.

I just finished an amazing 3 week off road adventure around BC in my 2000 Limited. I was fairly loaded down with camping gear. In the back I have 906's and Bilstein 5100's. I really like that setup when loaded. I think the 906's give me a 2" lift; I haven't measured the difference yet. I'd prefer only 1" but can live with 2".

I aired down to 25 psi and decided after a while to bring it down to 20 psi which is the sweet spot. I am running 32" Toyo Open Country A/T3's which I also really like.

So here is my question; I want a stiffer front end since I will install a plate bumper and eventually a winch. I want a very small lift, like at maximum 1". What is the suggestion to achieve this? I presume with 1" I am not going to tear the CV boots and prematurely age the LBJ's? If so I'm happy with 0.5" or 0.0" lift... My runner did some awesome obstacles with zero lift up front and 32" tires so I see no reason to go larger.

You can pair OME 881 or 882 well with 906 rears, on 5100s on first notch, Tundra 5100s for a stiffer ride. I'd try to get some feedback from someone with a similar rig running 882s to see how much they settle and what the ride quality is like on and off road.

If you wanted slightly more lift then the TRD coils are a nice progressive spring that yield about 2-2.5" lift
Driver side - 48131-AF100 Yellow/Yellow
Passenger side - 48131-AF090 Yellow/Blue

You could also look at aftermarket 2.0" coilovers for 0-3' lift from either King, Icon, Toytec, Radflo, etc in the $900-$1,200 price range, often found cheaper used, or 2.5" coilovers upwards of $1,300.

2000 4runner - 6112 600/650lbs Coils

Hey,

Had some 6112s w/600lbs coils w/o any additional weight up front on a 4th gen. Person who bought 4th gen upped to 650lbs coils with coastal bumper to retain front end lift.

Current 3rd gen lift is OME 880s on tundra 5100s at 1.5"of lift paired with OME 906 coils and 60027 shocks in the back. Im switching the 5100s out for 4runner 6112s set at 2.0"s of lift, paired with OME 906 with 60027 rear shocks. If, down the line i add say a winch or bumper/winch set-up would switching to 65olbs coils retain the ride of the 6112/600lbs set up given the extra weight?

Thanks

Sorry for the newbie question from a non-newbie, but I've never done front shocks. I ordered a pair of Tundra 5100's which I'll pick up tomorrow. I'll also order 881 or 882 for the spring. What else do I need to buy to make them go together as an assembly that I just swap out with the stock one? Should I pick up something from the wreckers?

You’ll need a top hat for a 3rd gen 4Runner and probably the top nut for the shock to top hat.

I would expect you will need different coils up front when adding a bu.oer and winch. I anticipated that with my tundra 5100s and 620# Eibach coils.

Research is your best bet, also don't be afraid to call places like Toytec or Wheelers and ask their experience/opinion, but sometimes you have to try things yourself to really know because each truck, bumper, winch are different and what you feel and like is the most subjective part.

Are you sticking with 880s on those 6112s?

My tundra 5100s came with the bushings and top nut, but even if they hadn't, I'd favor new vs something from a junkyard.

Since he is using 880/881 springs which are for a 4Runner won't he need a 4Runner top hat? I was under the impression that you had to use the correct top hat for the spring (Tundra or 4Runner) as the springs were different sizes at the top.

no. im selling the 5100/880 struts assembled. Im using the 600lbs coils that came with the 6112s.

I said top nut, not hat, you are correct, a 4Runner top hat is required

Then all you should need is a 4Runner specific top hat, the three nuts to secure it, and a coil spring compressor.

You may want to consider a quarter inch spacer plate to help combat driver side lean...

Depending on what winch and bumper you ultimately get, you may be able to move the notch on the coil spring seat on the shock to get the correct preload / ride height.

I said top hat then you said bushings so I thought we were talking about the same thing there. My bad.

I’ve been reading a bunch and frankly feel like I’ve learned very little. I don’t really want to lift my 99 (manual 4x4), but I wouldn’t mind if it came up an inch or so. Specially I want to level it and put 33s on it. Right now the rear is sagging a ton.

Goals:
I mostly use it for mountain biking and wood work so I pretty regularly have 2-300 in the back. I’d like it levelish.
I will probably take it on a south east trail every now and then, maybe some Colorado stuff and Moab stuff one every other year or so.
Daily driver in the Appalachians. I’d like to keep it riding ok and not really making body roll way worse.

Debating something like OME 808/906 with Bilstein 5100s or OE 99 springs with OE shocks or billy 4600s. Seems like there is some other witchcraft ideas people have?

You won't fit 33's with 1 inch of lift. If you get the 99 talls and Bilstein 5100's or go with OEM Tokico shocks, you can run 265/75/16's which are 31.6" tall. That's it unless you lift it at least 2" in the front and pound down the pinch weld and trim some stuff. You can do a lot of trails with the 99 talls and 265/75's

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I totally miss typed on that. I did mean 32s as in the 265/75s. Thanks for the help!

OME 880/906 is a great combo for me. I'm running 265/70/17's, just had to barely trim the liner and hit the pinch weld with a hammer once or twice.

I would recommend this setup to anyone looking for a "budget" lift.

I have SPC UCA and a Panhard Correction, but that's not necessary at all with this kit. I needed new UCA's anyway, so I went with SPC.
