3rd Gen 4Runner no power

I have a 98 4runner V6 and for about the last month it feels like you're towing a heavy trailer behind it when you accelerate. I took it to Toyota yesterday, they changed the plugs, wires, cleaned the throttle body and fuel injectors and it didn't help at all. They basically told me they don't know what's wrong with it since there is no check engine light. They also said it may be the fuel pump but they have no way to test that besides putting a $900 fuel pump on it to test it out. If you accelerate and hold the pedal in the same position the tach will dance back and fourth with a mild surging sensation. I'm sure you guys know more than those guys at Toyota. Any suggestions? Does the truck coast well?

Sounds like the ignition is retarding it's advance. Need to check crank shaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, knock system, and the ignitor for out of specification.

If fuel pump was bad, it would run badly all the time not just accelerating.

Also- The dealer can check it with an oscilloscope and or a fuel pressure gauge. Don't take anything to them anymore.

Thanks for the reply, the truck coasts just fine and seems to run decent once you get up to speed. One more thing I forgot to mention is in the last couple years there have been 2 or 3 times where I would come to a stop at a light and the engine would shut off. Thankfully it's only happened a couple times.

I just dropped mine off at the dealership for similar issues. My local shop couldn't figure it out and forwarded me to the dealership. Judging by the posts I've got on my thread and the general expertise here, the culprit is the injectors.

Mine is doing the same thing. I have been watching the MPGs slowly decrease over the past year as well. I'm sure the two things are related.

I have a brand new fuel filter, OEM plugs, OEM Sumitomo wires, new air filter, cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner etc...

I thought it might be my BFG all terrains, but really it started before the new tires...

The injectors are really the only thing I can think of

My first thoughts were either the plugs or injectors too and they replaced the plugs and cleaned the injectors at the dealership. So who knows. I just wish it didn't always feel like I was pulling a heavy trailer down the road all the time.

In my past experiences a fuel pump on it's way out has symptoms very similar to what you are stating. When stopping it feels like it's choking and has stalled out when coming to a complete stop. Also the tach dancing as well upon acceleration. I went through the normal routine of plugs, wires, injectors, MAF, sensor, etc. My fuel pump was the issue for me and it was not completely shot, just on it's way out. Just my 2 cents.
