Okay so I want to start moding my rig and 1st thing I want is of course an air intake system. I've heard the Volant systems are pretty popular. I have a 97' 3.4L SR5. Now the problem is on there website they have a Volant system for a 97'-04' 2.4/2.7L engine no 3.4L option. And then they have one for a 99'-03' 3.4L. So my question is does someone with a 97' have a Volant system if so which did you use?

skip the air intake system and do the deckplate mod and the isr mod. search on here and yotatech for more info about them.

I got it for my '02 since I like to keep things clean under the hood. I did the deckplate and isr mod in my '97 however.
Regrets because:
1. You can do basically the same thing with the deckplate and isr mod (a lot cheaper too)
2. Oiled filters are not great for MAF sensors
3. Rubber grommet to the throttle body was slightly too large so there is a small pinch in it when tightened down.
4. I had to hack one of the stock bolts (it was one with a sleeve around it) to fasten down the air box correctly (volant didn't think of this?!)
5. The mounting holes for the airbox and brackets barely line up with the stock locations so there might have been one bolt that did not go in all the way (ocd hell)
6. Due to the fitment issues the air filter is rubbing against the side of the airbox and damaging the fins.
Not sure if I got a rotten apple but the fitment was absolutely horrible. I did purchase it off ebay so perhaps it was tampered with.
But wait, there's more!
1. Sounds awesome
2. Over time has deepened my exhaust note
3. Butt dyno says "not bad"
Still wouldn't do it again. I can't speak for the other CAI's but thats my .02 with Volant. :dammit:

Im playing the devils advocate and don't hate me but i'm gonna get a little aggressive lol. I have Volant's system and have had it for 2 years or something now and still love it. no check engine lights or anything, and my TB is still so clean i would lick honey off it!
I've said it a million times but i will put money on it that my Volant will put out more power and performance than the deckplate mod. The problem with the deckplate is your air intake hole is in front where all you have is a headlight blocking all that fresh air. Your gonna get more hot air in there than any fresh air right?
Now you have a point in the issue of having the oiled filter, but that can be fixed with the Volants Powercore filter which i'm sure out performs the dryflows as well. Its expensive.. it has to!! No oil needed either. Volant will tell you they don't have a filter for the 3.4 setup but i have one i just ordered by size and it works flawlessly.
Maybe i got a newer one or older one but my intake fits perfectly to the stock holes and everything lined up great. there is no rubbing, and is all good!
Now for giving a little support to the deckplate mod. if all your wanting is the performance change then do the deckplate and save some change. this works almost the same as the volant intake almost...

Yeah The oil can muck up your throttle body and MAF sensor pretty good. I know mine got really hashed after 8 or so months. The filter actually comes in blue and I kid you not, it turned to grey. I think I did get a code once from that too I can't remember though.
But just to clear it up I think everything is set up the same in the engine bay. I'm just not 100% positive if there is a difference between the 97 and 2001.
If you order the powercore filter the part # is 61511. Volant will tell you it won't work but as long as your air I let hole is on the side it will work. Its been working in mine for about a year now. It even tones down the noise quite a bit too

The 99-02 intake will not fit on a 96-98 unless you also buy a 99-02 style MAF sensor.

these threads seem to come up once a week. I am pretty HAPPY with my K&N cold-air-intake. I clean it 1-2 times a year and have had the same setup for over 5 years now.
I would buy it again and give it 5/5 stars since it works exactly as advertised.

Well I guess Volant is out I don't wanna have to buy extra parts for it to work on mine. I've looked at the k&n and a 6 extra hp is not bad 
from the charts it looks like the Volant would have given 5 1/2 so k&n got it there. Really I guess my only concern was not actually having a box around my filter. But since it doesn't rain much here I think it'll be fine lots of dust in west texas though. I think I'll probably start off with the deck plate/isr mod and eventually switch over.

yeah the box isn't just to protect it from water its to protect it from the hot engine air. check out AFE intakes and also TRD makes one thats just like the volant
