3rd gen as a dd/family vehicle?

Not that I know of. I bought this thing off the lot at work so unfortunately I have really no history besides carfax on it and we all know how accurate that is...

Thanks all. this thread helped push me over the edge! Made an offer (and had it accepted) on an '02 this weekend. Now its just up to the banks to do their thing. Its in TX.. gonna have to wait a few weeks to pick it up... waiting is never fun!

Here's hoping you got the bank approval! I just talked to my bank about a 2000 I found in NJ for my wife. They hesitated because of age and miles-walked the guy outside to look at my '02 and showed him the mileage....he couldn't believe how good it looked and ran. I ended up backing out because my wife isn't certain she wants 2 4wd vehicles and I didn't want to pay 11K cash. My 2002 Sport has been the DD for 7 years, has the child seat anchor, and is my pride and joy. It does it all. The gas mileage is a trade off (minor to me) to not drive a mini van or wagon....I'm putting the cargo box or basket up top if I need cargo space.:driving:

Damn, you use 93! AFAIK, these engines are designed to run optimally on 87 and 89-93 actually burns too hot for them, not to mention the hole in your wallet! I think you're wasting $$.

Brian, different octane fuels don't burn "hotter" or "cooler". The higher the octane, the more resistance to detonation, which is mostly because of how fast or slow they burn, not how hot. Temperature and pressure remain constant, but speed of burn varies between octanes. Information police alert.... olice:

Any decent modern spark plug should be able to ignite a complete combustion event with 93 octane fuel in any vehicle. Now, if you used race gas or something over 100 octane you might not get complete combustion, but I honestly never see 93 not burning fully in a modern engine with good plugs and compression.


What is the compression ratio on our 3.4's anyway? Sorry this is way OT.



To keep it on topic: I use my Runner as a DD, and it'll stay my personal DD for a long time. We only have one kid now, but until we have 3, we'll be using the 4Runner for nearly everything. The wife's DD is a RAV4, so the 4runner is the biggest thing we have currently. I would recommend a 3rd gen 4runner to almost any body as a DD multi-use vehicle. As a matter of fact I have......2 friends and my brother now own 3rd gens simply because I rubbed off on them and they had to have one.

Thanks for the info! I'll look in my Haynes manual in a bit and see if it lists the compression ratio.
