Here is how I had my PSP (or anything with a headphone jack) direct wired into my 98 limited. This only works on external cd changers. This worked really well on our long vacations, we have a laptop playing 17gb of music, no repeats, no commercials.

Basically this is tricking the stock stereo into thinking the sound from your mp3 player is coming from the changer. The factory stereo will not work with this if it does not detect the changer.

Start by loosening the screws that hold the protective cover (do not need to remove).

Next remove the plug

Cut and strip the yellow,blue,gray and brown wires.

Connect the blue and brown wires (grounds).

I bought a 1.99 headphone connector at radio shack, cut off the male end and strip back the casing and the red and white wires. Connect the bare ground to the brown and blue wires.

Tie the white from the headphone jack to the gray wire.

Red goes to yellow and you are making music.

Insulate all connections, reconnect the plug and reinstall the changer.

In order for this to work, the changers has to still work.
To play over your factory stereo, switch to cd changer, pick a disc and set the player to repeat a track. If you don't set for repeat, you will loose sound as the changer changes discs.

unfortunately this doesn't work when you don't have a cd changer. I ordered a PIE auxiliary adapter #toy-aux and will post my results of it's install on my '02 when done.

I too was tired of the commercials on FM radio and the day the factory CD Player started to skip on my CD-R discs I decided to go for an Alpine head unit with Auxiliary input. To make things just a bit better, I got an Alpine XM Satellite tuner for it and still was able to daisy chain the iPod on top of that. So I'm a safe distance from any commercial any time I'm on the road.

But that is sort of an 'easy way out' compared to your trick with the changer. Well done.

PS. 149.8gigs is still not impressive, but RIAA might think it is. Don't you know Rule #1? You don't talk about Fight Club...
