3rd Gen Bolt in Cage

I would seriously be interested in a bolt together half exo cage.

I mean the full package- Plate front and rear bumper, Rock sliders and an exo cage that went from the bumpers, around the wheel wells, attached to the sliders, back up over the wheel well and attached to the other bumper.

It would offer the body protection from trees and rocks and even mall traffic.
It would also provide some protection if you were to roll on your side, but not on the roof.

I've always been a fan of this land cruiser's exo. Not sure how easy it would be to make it a bolt on. Still functional for a DD. But just for reference -

interior, because i'm more concerned about not killing my family than keeping the truck looking good, when i'm ready to slam into to stuff, i'll be ready to slam it into stuff, the exo's kill the looks enough for me that i wouldn't be interested in an exo until I'm ready to smash the truck up in general....so at that point it's kind of moot for me personally....i'd only want an interior..obviously others have see it differently, like the poll.....my question is why has this sat somewhere for 2 years...or whatever, haha

Just reminds me of [MENTION=53470]Rockdawg84[/MENTION] rollover right into a rock. I don't know absolutely anything about interior/exterior roll cages, but I'm not concerned about aesthetics and keeping my truck "pretty" and detailed etc, but I still wouldn't want my truck completely crunched and having problems opening my doors etc. I think an interior roll cage would be great when you think about a high speed rollover or something of the like, but trail wise I'd be more interested in an exo like the one on the land cruiser I posted just to prevent actual body damage upon tipping or hitting rocks on a trail, and it also provides much protection on the street too. Open to more insight, of course

Just shows you how tough our Runners are but an exo prob would have kept it from being totaled.

Your getting to do some great snow wheeling up there. Very cool.

the other nice thing about an exo is that it gives a lot of places to attach a strap and keep things from going bad in slow crawling situations. The high speed stuff definitely needs and internal because you get both the safety of a cage and the added strength of the body.

Oh, that reminds me, last year I ran into the guy who bought the old white SAS sonoran steel 4runner and he built a full exo on it. He does a bunch of custom fab work in Tucson and gave me his number in case I was ever interested in anything. His name is Craig, maybe you know him too lol but I have his number if you ever want it. Hope all is well Sam and the little ones are doing good!

Other than that, I doubt anything would change...I also like the how it incorporates a roof rack. Anyone have any more pictures?

Not all together....You can bend or place the tube where ever you want and still maintain access. I just finished with an internal partial cage on mine and am not quite happy with how it turned out. It's just something I threw together a couple a days at work...still not finished with it though and I set all my projects up in phases...that way if I don't like something about, I change it.

---Just measured the room to do this...
From the wheel well or out side lip of the plastic faring to where it meets the door is about 1.5". Then there's the spacing between the door and the start of the plastic on the door it self. So there's plenty of room to do this and ample room if using 1.75" as the radius of the tubing wont even come close. Now this will differ depending on how far back the sliders go...that'll be the wiggle room as all sliders are not created equal.

I've built a few cages too....a proper functional internal cage has no place in a daily driver. To have a cage, you must be harnessed no question. I have a cage in my little hotrod Volvo....it's SCCA legal, but I can't access the back seat, need harnesses and I built it REALLY tight.

In my opinion a tasteful minimalist exo cage like the white one above is ideal for a 3rd gen, I have a design in my head if I ever get around to building it.

Agreed...To take full advantage of a roll cage, one must build it completely and tie it into the frame. Then add in the 5-point harness. To further this, a full race helmet and the proper fire extinguisher or what ever the race circuit rules call for.

However, my deal is to be able to take my 4-year old wheeling with me. My wheeling style isn't extreme by any means and the partial cage is so that the wife (and mom of my 4yo) can rest easier knowing she's protected better. I've gone so far as to say she'd be wearing a helmet to protector her as well....but I feel that would be next to impossible on an all day trail run.

A simple exo would work well for you....I take my 6 year old daughter with me and have had to make her get out a few times while I drove through some nasty off camber stuff. 10 years ago I had a 2nd gen 4runner with an exo, it took some good rolls and flops, a well engineered exo can work and look decent.

It could be called that now but when my Pop and I would go to the races, it was called VARA...in So. Cal. more exact, ButtonWillow and WillowSprings California. My Dad raced SCCA back in the 60's with a Austin Healey.

Ohhhh I thought you meant offroad racing....the car doesnt race yet...its not sure if it wants to be a drift car or road race car or ridiculous street car.

I wish someone would make a cage. I want to have one after the SAS and it will cost an arm and a leg to have once custom fabbed
