3rd Gen FOA Mid-travel -- Interest Thread

This thread should be moved back to the 3rd gen forum any moment now. I've been working alongside a mod to ensure we're not breaking any group buy rules.

Hi everyone this is JD at FOA Shocks i want to start of by saying thank you to turbo8 for dropping his shocks off we are currently taking measurement and should start machining parts this up coming week. Second off, Abasalom prices are not correct as we discussed on the phone. The retail price of the front kit will be really similar to our oem F-150 kit that retails for $899...everyone in the group buy will get 15% off of the retail price...might be able to make them a little bit cheaper than the f-150 stuff will just have to wait and see.

A similar Icon\Fox setup will run you around $2500
$1500 for front 2.5 res shocks
$1000 for rear 2.5 res shocks

$765 for a front set seems pretty reasonable
not sure what the rears would cost.

Well, that's interesting news. I have really noticed some odd pricing and this ends up being one of them. The other is the price of BOSS front coilovers being so close in price to a set of kings. Getting the SS 1.2 with Radflos is starting to look like the best deal every day.

this is unfortunate. regardless of what you said to them, that is still a bad look for them in my opinion.

as im not particular on who builds my shocks as long as its a good product at a reasonable price, im still behind the group buy whatever direction it goes

this may have been addressed before, but has SS been approached with a group buy interest?

I'm wondering why their 2" coil over in the 6" length wouldn't work? The King coil over you'd want for a 3rd Gen is part number 25001-333, has a compressed length of 15.342", and an extended length of 19.330". The FOA 6" coil over has a compressed length of 12.3", and an extended length of 18.3". The compression length isn't a huge deal since the bump stops will stop the travel. You'd be loosing an inch of down travel between, but in my opinion that's not a huge deal either.

Maybe I'm missing something obvious here that someone can point out.

See, here's where I'm at; I can get front King C/O's for $996 shipped from DSM. I'm wondering if King or DSM would offer us a 10-15% discount for a group buy, bringing the price down to as low as $843. In my head, FOA made sense in $450-$550 price range, but at 90% the cost of King, they make much less sense.

Now, I still may go FOA rears at $160/each, and simply use a stud to eye adapter. This would bring my total kit price to $1,223 for the King/FOA setup. I consider this a pretty good deal for 2.5" suspension.
MStudt You and I must be brothers from another mother, because that has been my train of thought since day 1. If you didn't live in MO, I'd say we get together and find a way to make the FOA 6 or 8" shocks work. Even still, I still believe this would be a viable option would love to work alongside some other like-minded individuals to test this theory. Looking at the numbers, the 6" 2.5 FOA shock has 14.5" collapsed and 20.5" extended. Would this be an even closer match to the King C/O's? My only concern is we'd have to take the eye-to-strut mount adapter into account, so figure another 1/2" - 1" in length. What do you think?

JD had mentioned something about it hitting the CV's. I just don't see how would be possible, as the shock body is no larger in dimension than any other 2.5" shock. Then again, I'm not an expert, just a guy who leaves no stone unturned.

MStudt absalom you can do it. Its been done with 6" 2.5 body Kings and camburg top plates. They are 14" collapsed and 20" extended. Check out this thread on tacomaworld https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/kbauman92s-build.244474/page-2.

As far as hitting the CV goes, I believe it will hit CV unless you get bottom spring cup that is tapered up like what is on all the OEM replacement coilovers. FOA sells their coilovers with a flat spring mount which will probably interfere with the CV

On the front you cant simply just look at extended lengths. You can buy an off the shelf 6'' travel FOA shock and a top hat adapter and it will bolt in but it wont be correct you will lose up travel how much idk you would need to install it and cycle everything. Our shocks have a 9/16 id lower bearing and the factory bolt is 14mm and has an offset misalignment to help clear the cv shaft...I have had people with numerous types of rigs go this route and it will be better than a factory strut but not as capable as a real vehicle specific bolt in coil over. You will already be working with limited travel numbers where every bit counts. Same goes for the rear doing a stud adapter really starts using up travel.

TCMACH is correct our standard lower spring retainer is flat .....i have custom ones that are similar that will work its a shorter lower rod end with a c clip that accepts a longer tapered lower cup...by using a c clip to retain the lower retainer it allows you to gain a little bit of up travel.

also my price was including a remote reservoir the DSM kings do not they are emulsion ...no reservoirs would knock off $100 of of the FOA kit...I do highly recommend reservoirs on a shock that small that will be worked hard.

Always loved FOAs price. Remote resevoir foxes are $1600. So $800 FOAs is a great price. I'd love to take advantage of buying a set group buy or not. Same with my 1987 4runner!

Jd, you make a point about the Kings not having resi's. I look forward to seeing what you end up with, and basing my decision on that. I'm also glad to see the group buy changed from the 5-10% you had mentioned on the phone, to a more reasonable 15%.

Just my humble thoughts, not trying to stir anything up:

For people like me who don't want/need reservoirs and just want a quality coilover that is fully adjustable and able to be rebuilt, what is the draw to buy FOAs (which are a bit of an unknown commodity for most around here shopping for coilovers) over another brand like King?

Just being a forum member gets a discount from several vendors to the point that a set of Kings is right around $950 shipped to my door. My current plan is to just wait until Black Friday rolls around and buy a set of Kings then, since these FOAs are so close in price even with the group buy discount. For a company I haven't heard a lot about, that doesn't seem to offer as much in terms of finish, the price seems a lot higher than I had expected for a group buy.

If I'm missing something, please help me out. I'm certainly still open to buying a set of FOAs, but at this time I just don't see why it makes sense from a buyer's perspective.

Yikes, 900 bones for fronts only, I'll definitely have to back out at that price, not that it's a terrible deal considering it's a 2.5" with a resi, that's just too steep for my wallet.

Absalom, doesn't dsm usually do %10 discount at black Friday? If you can work something out for %15 off kings my mountain bike fund will have to wait.
