3rd Gen Fuel Gauge Issues

Glad I saw this as I am having the same issue and I was about to have the fuel sending unit replaced.

Mine will drop to empty after I fill it up and the light flashes. When I get to about 100-150 miles driven on the tank, the next time I start it up it shows full until I fill it up again. It's like it shows empty when full and full when empty lol. Not sure if that was your exact experience, but mine has been doing this for years now.

Do you have any pics of the burned out spot on the board? Trying to know what I'm looking for before I take out the cluster.

Well that looks like no fun! Thanks for the pic. I don't know if I want to go through the effort to have something like that fixed. I'm only averaging running out of gas once a year so far lol.

He asked if I knew if your repaired board works. Please close the loop with him. I will mail the entire cluster to him after I make arrangements to pull it. Miles was great to talk to--obviously one smart guy. Thanks again for the lead.

So mine didnt take because it was to far gone. We gave it a shot but I will be finding a new cluster and board that is not ****ed up. I have one sourced. Right now the cluster is back in the truck because I needed it back to take to work next week. Its still 5150 and some times it works and at times it drops out to E and light flashes but as soon as I kill the power and restart it, it will track fine again for awhile. So when I have a little time I'll swap clusters out and also put my new fuel gauge in the other cluster I get.

I think if your board is not as bad as mine was we all will be fine. He seemed to be a strait shooter with me and I liked that so I would try him again and I'm actually going to be calling him for parts the repair shop broke while it was there anyhow. Cup holder in back, Ugh!

I'm having this issue on my 97 and I'm trying to research as much as possible before just spending money on everything. Mine happened after an off-road trip where tank got banged up a bit, so my assumption is the sending unit either needs adjusting or replacing. I've never removed the tank or even looked at the sending unit, so I'm wondering is there a DIY out there on how to get to the sending unit and how to adjust it/remove it? Thanks

Timmy the Toolman has a video on YouTube where he drops the gas tank and replaces the fuel sending unit. If I remember correctly he goes through an explanation of the resistance that the gauge is supposed to have when reading full and empty so that would be a great video for you to watch to get some info.
