How?

With no cutoff shield for low beams it's not possible to tune the beam appropriately in a reflectorized housing. I know that PIAA states there is a "sharp cut line" but I'm not feeling it.

If you look at his first picture (bulb in the box) there's a shiny metal "nub" at the front-most LED chip (low beam). That's a small shield to block output to the bottom half of the headlight reflector, which is the high beam. Similar to a H4 halogen.

I've been running a different brand H4 LED headlight conversion on my dad's CRV, a copy the Philips H4 LED design X-treme Ultinon LED Car Lamp 12953BWX2 | Philips with some slight improvements. It has rotational adjustment so I could "tune" the cutoff and it did help. It was also cheaper than Philips or PIAA,been running them since December 2015 and no issues so far.

DISCLAIMER: I'm a proponent of HID projector retrofits, no need to start a discussion about how they're better, I already know that from personal experience and not just from things I read on the internet

I would like to thank Jason B at Burtman Industries as he answered all of my inquiries very quickly.

This review is for the PIAA H4 LED Bulbs on a 2001 4Runner SR5 sans fog-lights. These have been installed for a month and have been through snow, rain and below-freezing temperatures. They've seemed to hold up well so far.

Previously, I had the same Koito H4 stock halogen bulbs for about 6-years including Daytime Running Light mode. I liked them but just wanted something brighter.

Thanks for the great write-up! I've have about 15 people with these in 3rd gen housings. I think we are pretty lucky. It's sometimes a crap shoot, but I've talked with Piaa over and over about these, for almost 2 years before they released them and that's the one great thing is NOT getting flashed from oncoming drivers and not having to worry about the issues with HID's overtime. I've not had one return and everyone has been happy so far with the Piaa's.

I'll be curious for someone to give a 12-month update - I'm suspicious of the external fans these use for cooling.

I am a little more sensitive to the bright lights directly shining in my face. But I have tested this by driving the TSX while my S/O drove my 4Runner. The lights did not really blind me, it just lit up the entire interior of TSX.

As for the external fans, no issues yet. They are pretty quiet (Driver's side light is a little louder) and the sound cannot be heard when the hood is down. I'll get back to you with a year update.

i installed mine a while ago, but heres a couple shots:

night shot, tried to find the darkest road near me. this road is cut between a "tunnel" of trees, no outside light gets in.



pretty damn happy with them so far. dont have any before shots but the HID kit i was using is noticeably less bright. a full projector retrofit would probably be brighter, but id say these are a great deal when you consider the cost of a retrofit

didnt mess with the DRL's, dont need them in texas. they just come on when the lights are on.

I just popped some in. Yea, Dust Cover won't fit. Anyone, after time, finding that an issue? Dust, water, condensation?

I might fab up a gasket or just put some ugly caulk around there....

If those expensive ones are anything like the cheaper versions, there w/b zero problem without replacing the rear rubber cover, just doesn't need it. I've mudded, driven in hours of hard rain, nothing stops working as it should.

Besides if they get covered up where they should be trying to cool themselves would be no good. To top that, if those are like mine, they don't even go so hot you can't hold your hand on the back of them (or front lens) for extended periods of time. They run COOL.

I got these. Good except for the flicker when they are in Daylight Driving mode. I guess I have to disable that. Sadly.

Hey, question. I just installed LED headlights. When I flip it to high beam. The indicator light on the dash doesn’t come on. Is that normal ?

Mine does that with HID's. But with my HID's you only take the signal from one side of the headlight connector, so I assume it to be normal with that configuration.

It is for 97s, i know at least 01s the high beam ind. works. Search abit, someone on here may have hacked a solution for your MY. :cowboy:

Well it doesn’t bother be. And yes mine is a 97. I was just double checking lol. With the regular lights the dummy light works on high beams. But not with LED.

Just uprgraded mine from the stock bulbs to the high end Sylvania bulbs!! They made a huge difference! Maybe lookin to add some auxbeams or something for a lil more!
