Limited or SR5 doesn't matter. It's whether or not it has the locker. If it does, 4.30. If it doesn't, 4.10(assuming it has the 16 inch wheel option). This is in the case of V6 auto 4WD trucks. Limiteds are more likely to have the locker than the SR5 though.

I just want to add to your comment. In my experience, just because it's a limited doesn't mean it's more likely to have a 4.30 gears. I have come across more limited without the e-locker than ones that did. It's more likely that if it has an e-locker, it has 4.30 gears. I would agree that limited saw more elockers packages, but I wouldnt go as far as saying limited most likely came with 4.30.

It's funny because I have two family members that have 3rd gens, sr5 with e-locker and limited with no elocker.

Be careful saying absolute statements because many e-locked are 4.10s, many limiteds are 4.10s and there are still e-locked limited 4.10s. I doubt one feels much difference between 4.10 and 4.30 but I have read hours on what has what and there's no definitive way besides testing it with rolling or counting the teeth

Notice I was being specific with engines and transmissions. The 4.10 e-locked 4Runners are V6 manual transmission(not exactly common). Limiteds without the locker are 4.10 and Limiteds with the locker are 4.30. There are no e-locked Limiteds with 4.10 gears.

I wasn't trying to argue or anything. I have just seen everyone say different variations of what entails 4.10s and 4.30s and it doesn't appear it's that simple. But, realistically, it's hardly a big deal :)

The real oddball is the 4.56 e-locker. From what I've seen, it's only on the manual 4-cylinders. I've never seen an e-locker auto 4-cylinder, but if it's possible then it is the rarest(not to mention the slowest).

That's what I meant. We're talking about locked rears here, not open diffs.

I have 4:56 & no locker. I still need to check to see if I'm pre-wired, that would help a lot for my retro fit in the future.
 
Stock 4.56 e-locker V6 here (Canadian version).
295/75/16 (33.4in) with S/C and I'm getting 17.1 mpg average. I do run my tires at 45psi when not offroad.

Canadian spec V6 4Runners got 4.56 with the e-locker? Do you know of any other examples?
 
Just ordered 4.88s for my truck with 33s so I'll report back with my findings when installed. Probably gonna be a month or so. No armor on my truck stock bumpers and factory skids with no spare and 2001 auto 4x4 89k miles.

Curious, did you confirm by doing a spin test or did you get it from factory with the ratio on the invoice? How do you know they are 4.56 and not 4.30?
