3rd Gen Performance upgrades!?!?

Heyy guys i been searching and searching but all i keep coming up with is mods for the 4th Gens nothing for the 3rd Gens (excluding the supercharger), i know you can put on a supercharger to gain more power but i wont do that for right now maybe in the future project but is there anything else i can do?? as i would like to purchase a boat here soon and my Runner has barley any go under its own power i just cant imagine pulling a boat:ballchain: so are there any easy or cheap-mid upgrades i can doo to boost up the performance or even a good link to a site that will help me out thanks guys!!

Some easy stuff to knock out that is cheap are the following
ISR MOD (Intake Silencer Removal MOD)
DECK-PLATE MOD
NEW EXHAUST
All of this is easy, and can help you find some low end power.
Note, all of these make the 4Runner louder, if that is not your thing, no need to do them. But those are the most common done around here.

You can go for headers, but those will only really shine with a supercharger. This won't give you more power, but perhaps thinking about re-gearing if you tow a-lot? Just a thought.
 
I would say re-gearing for the illusion of more, "Power." Not a cheap mod though... I am trying to convince my savings account that it's worth it.

You could also do the, "elbow" mod for the airbox... Essentially remove the section of tubing going from the airbox to into your pass. side fender.

Other than (after) the supercharger I have done the deckplate, ISR mod, and elbow removal mod... I noticed no change with any of these mods. This could be due to already having the supercharger, so the ISR mod didn't make the, "sound" of power that everyone seems to love (less and less every month they drive it).

I'd buy a Tundra, if I were going to be towing.

Pretty anything you bolt on (intake, headers, exhaust) without remapping the computer isn't going to yield much gain... Not worth the money unless you like noise
 
Thanks guys on all the input!! Have any of you guys towed a boat with your lifted yotas or just when they were stock?? And if you noticed any difference from towing stock to lifted?
 
What type or size of boat Martin?

As long as you don't go overboard you should be ok on a small, light boat. Keeping in mind these things lack in two important areas: 1) Power, 2) braking, and you generated a third 3) stability (without having sway bars)


I've just got back from loaded to the roof with camping gear, 80lb dog, two people, and hauling a small trailer with two 230lb dirt bikes and it did it without issue, but that's a very light load compared to a ski boat, or even a 16/17' fiberglass.

For some reason I don't think you are thinking a float boat or aluminum jobbie. haha. Other than that, the truck will struggle.

Where, may I ask, are you using a boat around here? Ghost is really the only body of water nearby. BOAT (Bring out another thousand..)


BTW, Supercharger/Turbo would be the best money to power ratio spent. You'd want trailer brakes still.

Tow away, then report back.

If you want real power while towing, a v8 4gen 4runner is your best bet, or as mentioned before, a Tundra.

I was thinking no larger than a 17' just a 6 passenger inboard motor boat one from the late 90's!! I also have the tundra brakes so that will help my stoping a bit. And as for lakes just something close by so if there is a nice weekend and don't feel like wheeling I can just go out to a lake near by.

I have done the sea foam once before and thru the PCV valve and I don't think I noticed any difference.

I've towed a 21' more than a few times, and never had any problems. Granted, I didn't get anywhere in a hurry, and my mileage was about 14mpgs. I use a special ball mount that has some give in the stem, and that keeps from jerking the boat when taking off. The trailer has brakes which help as well. I also give myself plenty of room when coming to a stop.

I am also still using the stock brakes and haven't had any problems with them...I do have a tranny cooler.

Only lake that is close is Ghost. It's a back-up of the bow river.

Boats are pretty much a pain in the ass unless you are fully commited. Plus around here there are so few places to use them, and so costly if you go further out.

Just making sure you know what you are getting into =)
 
Supercharger. Nothing else (besides maybe headers) will make enough power (if any) to be worth the trouble (and headers might make 8 or 10 HP). A 4Runner is not made to go fast - it's made to go anywhere!

What was the longest distance you have pulled that boat?? And as for gas mileage that's not too bad my truck on a regular basis driving does that amount without any weight or load 13-14 mpg
