3rd Gen Rear Axle Upgrade Options - Full Float Conversion vs Full Float Diamond

Does Diamond not make a housing for a front HP 9.5". I was under the impression they did. I haven't investigated enough. The issue with running a stock front HP 9.5 is it's a passenger drop. It would take some $$$ to make that work.

Another thing to consider is the elockers in the cruisers are so temperamental. They end up taking a dump after a while.

I actually don't know. I just didn't think anyone made a reverse rotation R&P since there are no high pinion 9.5s that I'm aware of. I like your 8" plan. Anything can be broken, and good is often good enough.
 
FJ 80 all the way!!!

I vote for the FJ80 rear axle, as mentioned before. 9.5 " ring gear, Full Floating, Rear disk breaks, a bit wider and it has the ABS rings so the Speedo still works!! I installed one on my 99 and it was only 100 bucks more then what I sold my factor e-locked rear for. The e-locker has a different connector but pull the pins out of the old connector and reinsert in the 4runners and the factory e-locker button works like a champ.

What did you do about the passenger side offset?

The 4Runner has a double cardan joint in the drive shaft. It will be fine as long as it is parallel to the transfer case.

The only thing is you will need to fabricate is the mounts and move the spring buckets.

The offset was not an issue in my case. I'm not sure how close it would be to the factory gas tank as I relocated the tank to the back in favor of a 4-link set up.
 
I doubt the general 3rd gen population will ever have a broken axle or even will ever break an axle shaft. Not including those in rear end collisions. However, I'm willing to bet that those that wheel harder than most can likely have a imperfect axle housing. Even after a days wheeling can cause the slightest runout. Given that that semi-float design has such leniency when it comes to tolerances you'll likely never know of even the slightest bend in the housing. You would in a shaft, but not the housing. The full float design is much tighter tolerances. The slightest bend in a housing and you'll start grenading parts in a domino effect. This worries me.
