3rd gen rear brake adjustment.

I went in and replaced my rear shoes. Got everything buttoned up and used the e-brake method to adjust them.

The question is: with this method can you over tighten them? If they're "self adjusting" would they loosen to the proper spec?

I went through this after the dealer f'd up a rear axle seal job.
It appeared to me that the adjusters don't loosen....they only tighten.
Mine were too tight, dragged, heated up and warped the drums.
I had to go in(meaning pull off the drums) several times and adjust the brakes looser, and coordinate that with adjusting the parking brake to match.
In the end it was perfect, and has had no more issues for almost 1.5 years now.
Easy, but somewhat time consuming.

I have a long pedal travel, but the brakes feel fine after that point. I'm thinking the rear pads are out of adjustment and I've tried the auto adjustment with the e-brake with no change noted.

Did you experience this before and did it fix/change the pedal travel?

I replaced my drums and I think I went overboard with rolling backwards and E-Braking. It must of adjusted too tight and maybe even gotten stuck because after a nice day cruise I pulled in my driveway and smoke was pouring off the drum. The next day I loosened the adjuster a good bit and regreased the contact points. As previously stated I also adjusted it as loose as possible but still able to stop it from spinning by hand with the ebrake. I also read on another post that the best luck people have had is keeping it looser rather than tighter when installing shoes.
