Update: shortly after posting this, found out I have a cracked cylinder head. No real surprise with 311k on the original motor. After debating, I'm dropping in a brand new OEM engine. I guess it's some new program Toyota is doing where they manufacture old engines brand new for certain makes/models. Needless to say it's not cheap but figured I'm in this car for life and didn't want to pay for a low mileage engine where I had little to no history on upkeep. Looked at a remanufactured one which was not much cheaper. Anyone ever heard of this before? Thought I would at least share for those who hadn't/care.

That is a weird combination you have there. White with Silver flares & chrome bumpers. Usually Silver flares come with plastic silver bumpers. Plus the Black wheels make it too busy. Go with Silver wheels or paint the bumpers & flares black. IMHO.
And lose the running boards...

Lucky for us the engine in a 3rd gen 4runner is one of them. They offer a 3 year warranty and unlimited miles. It's not cheap but if your into your car for the long haul, it's another option.

Still looking good man! Will your next set of tires be 285s again? Although, I imagine it might take some time to wear those 295 KO2s down considering you have another trail vehicle as well.

Thanks. I think I will end up back on 285s. I have yet to run a trail that could stop the 4Runner on that tire size with two lockers on deck.

I was throwing this thing around some curvy mountain roads the other day and accelerating out of turns in second gear, this truck can still get up and go.

It really rips from 25-60 with the gear selector pulled down to hold second, and going back to 285s will only contribute to that aspect.

Also, the Tacoma will be for sale before the new year.

Looks good! What are you getting to replace the Tacoma? Is it too much for a daily driver when you've got the 4Runner also, or just time for something different?

I've always liked that color on Tacomas. My dad had one in that color we took out into the New Mexico desert a few times back when I was a kid. Kinda wish I could buy it from you when you sell it. :hungry:

so the dealer has to do the install. otherwise they would not warranty it, so it's not really a crate engine program but a new dealer engine program.

not a huge deal I guess.

I'm guessing cost for this option is going to run $10K for sure maybe more?

no that is cool with me, being able to just have everything fit in and work like factory is worth something.

unfortunately the 3 Toyota deals in my area are all terrible. just not sure I could trust them to do an engine swap. pretty sure they would mess it up

Got some itchy feet, so I hit the road. 2000 miles in 10 days. From the Oregon/California border, to the Southern California coast, to the mountains of Utah, and back again.

Great ride and great shots! Looks like some fun adventures. I really need to move out to somewhere in the American southwest...

Couldn't you just get a new head? What is wrong with the block that justifies a new engine?
