Photo of 2001 4Runner SR5 with Mods
Hi all,
I'm new here to the T4R forum, and wanted to give a quick introduction along with a photo of our 4Runner. I previously owned a 1996 4Runner SR5 5MT that I ended up selling during the great recession. I've also owned a 2000 Tacoma TRD OR 5MT that I ended up selling when our family began to grow. I currently own a 2017 Tacoma TRD OR 6MT and my son, who just got his drivers license this year, bought himself a 2001 4Runner SR5 4AT. He found it from a local seller in Denver who was selling it cheap because it needed work. The 4Runner had 209K on the odometer when we bought it, but it had a strong engine and gearbox. It was well taken care of, but also had lots of mods performed.
One of the previous owners installed a bull bar, Smittybuilt winch, rear steel bumper with spare tire carrier and welded-on rock sliders. The front bumper, rear bumper, and rock sliders are in dire needs of sand blasting and repainting/powdercoating, but that's a project for the future. A previous owner also had an OME lift kit installed with the HD springs. I also recently discovered the diff drop mod was performed as well.
We took care of the most serious repairs first, but have more to complete. I'll be posting some questions down the road as we tackle each project one-at-a-time.
We installed Spidertrax spacers at the corners, and that has dramatically improved the stability of the truck. Wheels and tires are nothing special, but my son did replace the tires with Falken Wildpeak AT3's.
We've driven the truck from Denver to Salida twice this summer (160ish miles each way through the heart of the Rocky Mountains), and never had a problem with how it managed the steep climbs. The 5VZ motor isn't going to win any drag races, but that was never the point in buying the 4Runner.
I'm looking forward to chatting with fellow 4Runner enthusiasts and experts. I'll be asking questions for sure!
