98 t4r
had it for about a year , did some maintenance.
1.both rear axle seals.
2. rear brakes. ( will do upgrade to drums sometime)
3. All fluid change
4. gasket and bushings for gear shifter and 4x4 shifter
5. front sway bar links and LBJ
6. cluster needed to be rplaced ( speedo wasn't working )
7. seat covers, trains cooler and thats is so far.

1998 Limited Maintenance
Hi guys. Have been working on my 1998 Limited for the past 8 months. Really happy with the results and the final step is to repaint the while car in the same color scheme it came in. Here's what I have done:
New Suspension- Bilstein 5100's front and rear, OME springs front and rear, new top mounts, hardware, etc. Gave it about a 1" lift all around.
New Lower control arm bushings- WhiteLine poly
New larger front bump stops - Energy suspension
New steering rack bushings - Energy Suspension poly
New OEM lower ball joints and bolts
New timing belt, water pump, tensioners, idlers, thermostat
New valve cover gaskets, rear cam plugs, front cam seals, half moons, intake manifold, spark plug seals, spark plugs
New to me OEM catalytic converter (Car was throwing a p0420 code so I bought a cat off of a parts 4runner on OfferUp and bolted that in)
New exhaust and gaskets- walker exhaust (sounds like OEM, old one had the cat welded in as it must have been stolen at some point)
New fluid in the rear diff, front diff, and transfer case
New wheels off of a 2000 4runner
New tires Firestone Destination XT - 265/75/16
New paint - Anthracite Metallic
I love how easy this car is to work on. I did all of this work in my driveway with basic tools and YouTube videos. I'll post final pictures once I get it sprayed, but it feels like the car has new life. I'll likely take it in for a transmission service, and probably a coolant flush. I am also considering putting in a new radiator and transmission cooler. The car has 215,000 miles on it but it feels better than when I bought it in 2016. If anyone has any other suggestions on what I should be doing as general maintenance I'm all ears - I want to make this car run for as long as possible.

how did you do the grill? Did you just remove the chrome part from the OEM grill?

2000 SR5 Manual
Recently purchased my second 3rd gen 4Runner (third 4Runner overall). 2000 SR5 Manual with 173k miles. Timing belt and water pump were done summer 2023 at 160k miles. Exterior is admittedly a bit rough but the interior is in great shape. It needs brake pads and tires. Having a mechanic give it a look wouldn't hurt either.
I care more about mechanical reliability than cosmetic imperfections. However, I should be able to clean up the exterior with some effort. The PO removed the fender flares and door molding / cladding. The adhesive is still on the doors, which I'll try to remove. Depending on cost, I'd like to replace the fenders & maybe door molding. Also need to remove adhesive from those window rain guard things. Only one of them is still on the truck and I cracked it in the cold.
Right now, the charm of this rig is that it was cheap and runs good. I don't want to ruin my experience by spending too much on it.

One of my two. The son currently has the green 2001. (pic below)
The other one, "my 4runner" - 2000 SR5 V6 Auto 142K, was a recent buy and no pics yet.
Nothing special about them. No e-lockers and both automatics. Only thing special is low miles and needing frame attention.
"My" 2000 is not bad but needs Saf-T-caps for most of drivers side. The son's 2001 needs a little frame repair.
Both were Northern/Rust belt vehicles.
On a new adventure with 4Runners. I got the hit list of everything I need to do, and so it starts.
Both are stock with no mods, yet.
BTW the 2000 has a working clock......bonus.

Been working in Minnesota but I am home in PA for Christmas. I have to go back after the holidays and then I'll only be out in MN for another five weeks.
I'm thinking about driving "my" 4Runner back. I figure if it makes the 800 mile drive to MN, doesn't leave me stranded during the five weeks and makes it back to PA, I might have a winner that is good to refurbish.
2000 SR5 4x4, V6, rusty underneath (Saf-T-Cap poster child), low mileage -at 142K. Did some basic fluid changes when I got home in early November to give me a level of comfort. The rig has a pretty good maintenance history but no entries for LBJ's or timing belt. It is a recent purchase and had it shipped home in October. I only had some time for basic fluids last time I was home.
When I finish the job in MN and get home, I have a long list of things to do to it.
