3rd gen T4R vs Jeep JKU 4 door ?

Hello,
My brother is looking at getting a 3rd gen 4 runner or a Jeep 4 door from 2007 ish... aside from the obvious fact that the doors and roof come off the Jeep, how do they compare ? He doesn't off-road hardly or at all, he'd be DDing it for getting around with his wife and 2 kids.

Personally, I prefer the 4runner, my neighbor had one years ago and I always loved the look, plus the Toyota quality - thing had like 300,00 miles but looked brand new.

They don't. One is a reliable and effective offroader with great DD chops, and the other is a Jeep.

I drove my friend's 2007 Rubicon from LA to Vegas a couple months ago and I have to say in terms of road manners, it SUCKED!!! Loose steering and not very refined is the best way I can describe it. For a DD and occasional offroading, you can't beat a 3rd gen. My 1998 4runner with 265K miles drives better than his 2007 Rubicon with 150k miles, plus I can handle the trails just as good as he can. BTW besides some of the small things that broke on his jeep, some of the major things he had to replace was both his CATS, alternator, battery, and his engine leaks oil.

He is looking at an 08 jeep tonight and on Sat he's going to look at a 2000 4runner thats about an hour away.

Reference the JD Power results. Tells a lot.

The 07 - 11 Jeep v6 was not known for power. The Jeep JK 12'+ engine and transmission were superior to earlier models. The biggest Jeep JK advantage is the Rubicon for off-road use. It sounds like this is a non issue for your brother.

To be fair, my 1994 Wrangler was bulletproof. Rode like a donkey and was a barrel of fun. It would cost me the same money to buy another one today. Bizarre resale value. Wish I had never sold it...

The 4Rs are more refined with higher quality components. Late models are getting a lot of grief from owners though. Toyota has gone American on us.

I will be biased coming from a family that owned Jeeps its entire life.

Reliability of the straight 6 is great. Solid motor. My parents have one in the family at 400k miles. Needs lots of work now but was a solid performer. The v8's where just crap. So many issues we had. Transfer case issues also, very hard to shift in and out of 4x4.

Offroad overall the jeep is way better if solid axle. More offroad support, more parts, better prices.

Road manners on a solid axle are not good and the short wheel base makes it worse.

4runner

Pretty reliable overall. Some minor issues need addressed when buying an older 4runner but not much.

Offroad they do pretty good stock, but without modification the Jeep will destroy it. Locker helps keep up.

Road manners are more that of a car because of the IFS.

Biased jokes aside, I was never big on the JK. It doesn't have that simple, bouncy Jeep appeal of the TJ and earlier. Then again, this is due to some suck ass government requirements created in response to idiots that believe the older Jeeps are dangerous by design. The regular car reviews take on it nailed it. The ones powered by that mid 90's 3.8 minivan boat anchor are terrible. The 3.6 is a significant improvement.

I think the JKU is a very good looking vehicle. However, having spent a LOT of time behind the wheel of one, I will never own one.

The price is a HUGE difference as well. If he can afford a JKU I'd be purchasing a 2009 4Runner Trail Edition. If he can find one.

That'll be my next vehicle.
